CEO of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, Andrew Parker, regretfully announces the discovery of a rhino carcass on their property today.
The young male White Rhino had one of his horns cut off, allegedly by Rhino horn poachers who entered by cutting the electrified reserve fence on the South-Western Boundary of the world famous reserve nearby the Paul Kruger Gate of the Kruger National Park. The rhino was most likely killed between two and three this morning, 09 September 2011.
The Sabi Sands Game Reserve management team, together with the local authority Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, South African Police Services and Quemic Security Services, have commenced with an immediate investigation.
“This is a very sad day but we will continue to be vigilant with our security for the Reserve, using every resource we can to prevent this from happening again. We spend close to R 2,5m on security every year and given that this is only our second loss we feel that we have control over this problem,” Nick More, one of the Executive Committee members concluded.
So very, very sad.
I pray youfind the people responsible for this.
Greed is an ugly thing.
Especially when it leads to the demise of a creature that harmed no one.
Eith all the ugly in this world…animals and children are a blessing.
They need to be cherished.
SO very sorry to hear of the loss of one of your very precious Rhino – Hopefully you will catch the murderers and they will be put away for a LONG time !!
I have no words to say…barbaric terrible humans.Only two over a period is still two to many.
Please be as vigilant as you can even tho” I know it costs a lot of money.
Another one! So sorry to hear this. This is definitely out of control in S.A.
Have you gps’d your rhino so the horns can be tracked? Where the horn goes, there too go the poachers! Sabi Sands is a highly vulnerable region. 5 Star? Hopefully you can afford the best anti-poaching methods available to protect your own.
Disgusting and maddening on many levels. These “people” should be shot on sight.
I hope those guilty of this horrid act will be found quickly and punished, and feel protection in any form is wise. I truly appreciate the opportunity of being able to view all the animals as well as learn about them and that part of the world from Tara, Marc and Seb.
This is so sad! I can only hope they catch and fully prosecute whoever is responsible. I also hope there are laws in place to also prosecute those who purchase these items, because without demand there would be no need for supply!
This is just sickening…..I thought that Sabi Sands was “safe” for rhinos
I’m so sorry to hear about this.
Absolutely awful.
Hi and thanks for finding the time to describe the terminlogy to the beginners!
