Scientific Name: Galago crassicaudatus

Common Name: Thick-tailed Bushbaby

  • They are found from Sudan to southern Natal in eastern Africa
  • They are found in lower densities than the Lesser Bushbaby.
  • They feed mainly on fruit and tree gum, also taking nectar, insects and seeds.
  • Thick-tailed Bushbaby's are more gregarious than the lesser and start foraging after dark.
  • The males show territorial behaviour.
  • They also display behaviour called leg rubbing. They rub the lower half of the leg on a branch, thought to be connected with stress or danger communication.
  • They make about 10-11 different calls.
  • The males weigh about 1.4kg and females 1.2kg

 

Breeding:

  • The female follows a 35-49 day cycle and comes into heat for 2-10 days.
  • They breed once a year in Southern Africa and have a gestation period of 4 months.
  • Commonly 2 young are born occasionally 3.

 

Predators:

  • Snakes, large owls and African wildcat.
