Hi everyone,

Thank you for joining us last night for the fireside chat, it was extremely interesting to talk to Phillip from Qumic who works for the Antipoaching Unit for Sabi sands and Arrie from the rhino orphanage. If you missed the chat here is a link to the You Tube, thanks once again to muttluver for recording this and making it possible for others to watch! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7mxUX8irPk

For those who have been asking how to send further donations here are the details:

For Sabi sands Anti poaching Unit, there are two ways you can donate:

The website http://www.virginunite.com/fundraiser/All-for-the-Rhinos/ set up by Lindsey Hanekon for the Rhinos. This method is recommended for international viewers as there are no bank transfer fees and if you live in teh UK they get gift aid on top of the donation.

Or The direct bank details are as follows:

Ulusaba T/A Pride and Purpose

First National Bank

Randburg commercial branch 254005

Cheque account no:  62187747012

Address: Cnr Main Avenue and Republic Road, Randburg, 2125

Swift code:  FIRNZAJJ

REF: RHINO

For the rhino orphanage the details are as follows:

Von der Hoven Attorneys Trust

Nedbank Mokopane

Acc. 1468 100 645

Branch 146 805

Ref: H1466

This is a temporary trust fund while they are processing the orphanage as a charity with it’s own trust fund. As you will hear in the video, the orphanage is in it’s early stages but progress is moving swiftly to complete it.

We also invited 2 members of the press to join us for the chat and to see what we do here. Dianne, who also joined us for the drive the following morning, will be writing a piece for the local paper, Kruger to Canyon. We felt it might give the local community a boost to know there are people across the world who care about what is happening to the rhino here in South Africa. Dianne has since given me the link to the piece she has written which made front page of the local paper on the 12 Nov 2011 http://www.ditippingwoods.com/2011/11/13/virtual-tourists-support-our-rhino/. She has also become a Djuma Djunkie and is keen to join Ganda as often as she can! Her partner Joel is the African consultant for a Major Dutch Newspaper and is also keen to write a story about the live drives, which might help to boost numbers!

I have also been asked about the possibility of buying the “save the rhino” bracelets. I am looking into whether it is possible to do so and will give more details once I hear back from a possible source.

If anyone would like a copy of the certificates to hand out, or put up in classrooms, shops etc please send an e-mail to tara@djuma.com.

Thank  you so much for caring  about these magnificent creatures!

I have since been sent the Rhino calf’s Prayer by Yolande Van Der Merwe that Arrie discussed at the end of the chat, here it is for you to read:

A RHINO CALF’S PRAYER

Oh Lord, I pray for mercy
I won’t survive on my own.
Where do I go, where do I hide,
I’m confused and scared and alone.

I still hear the gunshots ringing Lord
a burning pain real and true,
but I have to keep on running
or for sure they’ll hack my horn too.

O Lord, I pray for reason,
please help me come to score,
why the humans that I’ve trusted
have started this bloodthirsty War.

They came and murdered my mother, Lord
their chainsaws dripping with red.
They left her alive and helpless
until to her death, she bled.

How many more like me Lord,
before we vanish from this Earth?
How many more mutilated bodies
and little calves lost before birth?

Oh Lord, I pray for forgiveness
towards those who do the Unjust.
Those who’ve taken my family
and left them bleeding in the dust.

Oh Lord, I pray there’s still people
guardian angels from above,
who’ll take a little calf and heal its wounds,
and protect it with all their Love.

Lord, I cannot run anymore,
I’m small, my strength fading fast,
my legs are numb, my breath is done
I hear my heart beat its last.

Oh Lord, I pray for mercy,
have compassion for my strife.
Please hurry Lord, send me an angel,
a human who’ll save my life.
                                              YvdM

Hi everyone!

The total amount raised to help the rhinos is an amazing R30,000! We feel so thrilled such an amount has been raised and want to shout about it to help raise awareness about the plight of these magnificent creatures as much as possible!

The fireside chat on Friday 4th is the focus point where both organisations will be joining us to chat about what they do and it will also give those who wanted to donate more information about them and how to go about donating to them. We are also inviting the media to come and cover the story at the same time in the hope it help to get the word out there that something needs to be done now to save these animals.

We thought the money would be best split between 2 organisations, one being an anti poaching team on the ground who will help to protect the rhinos. The other R15,000 will be given to a facility who can look after the orphans of mothers who didn’t escape the poacher’s bullet, but who are too young to look after themselves. The 10 people who bought the t-shirts and paintings were asked to choose  between 2 anti poaching units and 2 orphan facilities.

Not taken at Sabi sands

The anti poaching team chosen was the Sabi sands team as they are helping to protect the rhinos we see on the drives. The money will used to buy more equipment to help them to detect poachers and to help protect their team when they face the poachers.

The first ever rhino orphanage is the other organisation chosen. They are building a facility which has a restricted access, a vet on site and is being endorsed by Karen Trendler and San Parks to name a few.

I hope you can join us at 19.30 CAT on Friday 4th Nov for our special fireside chat.

Save a rhino – bid for a hand painted t-shirt! http://www.djuma.com/2011/save-a-rhino-bid-for-a-hand-painted-t-shirt/ http://www.djuma.com/2011/save-a-rhino-bid-for-a-hand-painted-t-shirt/#comments Fri, 23 Sep 2011 08:59:36 +0000 http://www.djuma.com/?p=829

Hi everyone,

Sebastien is working hard on trying to finish the video of the live drive crew, that is Sebastien, Marc and myself, painting 8 t-shirts, which are being auctioned off to raise money to help save rhinos. Once the video is done, it along with the fireside chat we had on rhino day, Sept 22, will be loaded onto YouTube, Facebook and on the Safari channel on Wildearth.tv between drives.

Where does the money go?

The crew are paying for the t-shirts, so ALL the money raised will go to a charity that is trying to stop rhinos being killed for their horns. If you are one of the 8 who win a t-shirt, you can put forward your rhino charity of choice. The crew will then pick which one of the 8 suggestions to send the money to.

Bidding:

The auction is open now and will end on Sunday 25th at 18h00 CAT. The lucky 8 buyers will then be announced on the Sunday PM drive after the closing of the bids.

You can either bid on facebook OR via e-mail.

Facebook: Look for the T-shirts for rhino day album on the public pages for the crew, or on Djuma Private Game Reserve page. Place your bid under the t-shirt you would like to bid on.

E-mail: If you would like to remain anonymous or don’t have or want access to facebook, please e-mail bids to questions@djuma.com and we will place a bid on your behalf. Please put in the subject line of your e-mail “BID”. Your e-mail needs to include the name of the t-shirt you are bidding for and your amount. Please also state which name we should add with the bid or if you wish to remain anonymous.

Payment:

The lodge will contact the 8 buyers on how they would like to pay for the t-shirt either bank transfer or credit card.

The t-shirts :

Name : Sassie BLACK     Size: Large    Who : Seb, Marc, Tara and Sassie the puppy!

(Please note spray paint was used by the left sleeve, but with a little help it was salvaged and even Sassie added her paw print to it!)

Name: Seb RED    Size: Large     Who : Seb

Note: The only t-shirt with something on the front and back. The picture on the left is the front, on the right is the back.

Name : Tara WHITE    Size: Small    Who: Tara

Name: Marc GREY          Size: XL                Who: Marc

Name: Marc WHITE         Size: XL           Who: Marc

Name: Seb GREY    Size: Small    Who: Seb

Name:  Tara BLACK     Size: Medium     Who: Tara

I will post a daily blog on the highest bids for the t-shirt and it will be mentioned on drive too!

Rhinos by Dia

This painting has been added to auction off by Dia. The auction is open to US residents only due to shipping restrictions. The size is 12×16 on canvas. If you would like to place a bid please quote “Dia Painting” in the e-mail. Thank you to Dia for donating this stunning painting to help raise money for the rhinos!
