Weeping Boer-Bean Schotia brachypetala
- This is a semi deciduous tree growing upto 25m
tall.
- They are found in warm dry areas growing in
bushveld, banks of seasonal watercourses and on top of termite mounds.
- They can be found from Zimbabwe to Mozambique
to the Eastern Cape.
- The bark has a rough texture and is greyish
to reddish brown in colour.
- They produce flowers from August to November
and produce fruit from January to May.
- The flowers produce plenty of nectar, which
attracts a large variety of birds and insects.
- The bark may be used medicinally for the treatment
of hangovers, heartburn and to purify the blood.
- The wood may be used for furniture, fuel or
as flooring. The bark produces tannin, which is used to dye the nets
of some Tsongan fishermen.
- Kudu, impala, Nyala and giraffe eat the leaves.
The larva of the Blue Charaxes, Giant Charaxes and the Foxy Charaxes
all feed on the leaves of this tree.
