Weeping Boer-Bean Schotia brachypetala

  • This is a semi deciduous tree growing upto 25m tall.
  • They are found in warm dry areas growing in bushveld, banks of seasonal watercourses and on top of termite mounds.
  • They can be found from Zimbabwe to Mozambique to the Eastern Cape.
  • The bark has a rough texture and is greyish to reddish brown in colour.
  • They produce flowers from August to November and produce fruit from January to May.
  • The flowers produce plenty of nectar, which attracts a large variety of birds and insects.
  • The bark may be used medicinally for the treatment of hangovers, heartburn and to purify the blood.
  • The wood may be used for furniture, fuel or as flooring. The bark produces tannin, which is used to dye the nets of some Tsongan fishermen.
  • Kudu, impala, Nyala and giraffe eat the leaves. The larva of the Blue Charaxes, Giant Charaxes and the Foxy Charaxes all feed on the leaves of this tree.
