Camel's Foot Pilostigma thonningii
- This is a deciduous to semi deciduous tree growing
to 12m.
- The bark is a light grey brown colour and rough.
- They grow in open woodland and in wooded grassland
and are found from Sudan to Mpumalanga.
- The petals of this tree are white to pinkish
in colour, produced between November to April; fruit is produced between
June to September.
- Kudu and elephant and young pods eaten by baboons
eat the leaves.
- Farmers in the lowveld grind up seeds off this
tree as fodder for cattle during winter months.
- The inner bark can be used to make a good quality
rope. Bark, which is broken up and boiled, produces tannin used to tan
leather.
- The seeds and the pulp of the fruit are edible,
young leaves are chewed to relieve thirst.
- Extracts taken from the root is used to treat
hookworm.
- They are found growing in open woodland and
wooded grasslands in low to medium altitudes.
- The unripe fruit pods can also be used as a
substitute for soap.
