Camel's Foot Pilostigma thonningii

  • This is a deciduous to semi deciduous tree growing to 12m.
  • The bark is a light grey brown colour and rough.
  • They grow in open woodland and in wooded grassland and are found from Sudan to Mpumalanga.
  • The petals of this tree are white to pinkish in colour, produced between November to April; fruit is produced between June to September.
  • Kudu and elephant and young pods eaten by baboons eat the leaves.
  • Farmers in the lowveld grind up seeds off this tree as fodder for cattle during winter months.
  • The inner bark can be used to make a good quality rope. Bark, which is broken up and boiled, produces tannin used to tan leather.
  • The seeds and the pulp of the fruit are edible, young leaves are chewed to relieve thirst.
  • Extracts taken from the root is used to treat hookworm.
  • They are found growing in open woodland and wooded grasslands in low to medium altitudes.
  • The unripe fruit pods can also be used as a substitute for soap.
