Jacket-Plum Pappea capensis

  • This is an evergreen to semi-deciduous tree, growing upto 9m.
  • They can be found from Ethiopia to the western Cape, growing in moist habitats except in forests.
  • Trees found in the more arid areas have much smaller leaves than tree growing in Mpumalanga.
  • The bark is grey to light brown and mostly smooth.
  • The flowers are found on heads of small spikes, different sexes are found on different trees.
  • The flowers are produced from September to May.
  • The fruit is a velvety green capsule, the inside being bright red in colour, fruits are produced from December to July.
  • Almost all browsers in the area feed on this tree as well as most of the fruit eating birds.
  • The larva of the pearl spotted Charaxes feed on this tree.
  • The oil obtained from the seeds of this tree can be used for oiling rifles.
