African Teak Pterocarpus
angolensis
- This is a deciduous tree, which may grow upto
30m tall.
- They can be found in open woodland and wooded
grassland from Zaire to Kwazulu-Natal and are thought to indicate well-drained
soils.
- The bark is dark grey, rough and fissured.
- The tree produces flowers from August to Febuary
and starts fruiting from January to June.
- This is thought to one of the finest furniture
timbers in the world.
- It is often used for window frames, panelling
and floors.
- Vervet Monkeys and baboon eat kudu and elephant
feed on the leaves and the pods.
- A remedy made from the bark is used to treat
malaria and black water fever.
- Burnt roots, which are then drunk in water is
said to treat asthma.
- Many other abdominal complaints ranging from
diahorrea to bilhartzia is treated by drinking remedies made from the
roots.
