African Teak Pterocarpus angolensis

  • This is a deciduous tree, which may grow upto 30m tall.
  • They can be found in open woodland and wooded grassland from Zaire to Kwazulu-Natal and are thought to indicate well-drained soils.
  • The bark is dark grey, rough and fissured.
  • The tree produces flowers from August to Febuary and starts fruiting from January to June.
  • This is thought to one of the finest furniture timbers in the world.
  • It is often used for window frames, panelling and floors.
  • Vervet Monkeys and baboon eat kudu and elephant feed on the leaves and the pods.
  • A remedy made from the bark is used to treat malaria and black water fever.
  • Burnt roots, which are then drunk in water is said to treat asthma.
  • Many other abdominal complaints ranging from diahorrea to bilhartzia is treated by drinking remedies made from the roots.
