African Wattle Peltophorum africanum

  • This is a semi deciduous tree, which can grow upto 15m tall.
  • A lot of this tree branches out fairly close to the ground.
  • They can be found from medium to low altitudes, in wooded grassland and along the edges of vlei areas.
  • The bark is brown in colour, rough in texture, being longitudinally fissured.
  • The flowers are bright yellow and conspicuous being produced between September to April.
  • The fruit is a flat, elliptically shaped pod produced between December and May.
  • The bark is used medicinally by various African tribes, chewed to relieve colic.
  • An infusion is used to treat stomach disorders and a steam remedy to treat sore eyes.
  • The wood is soft and used for carving; leaves are sometimes browsed by game like elephant, kudu and giraffe.
  • The gum of these trees is said to be poisonous and Black Rhino strips off the bark.
