False Marula
Lannea stuhlmannii
- This is a deciduous tree growing upto 15m.
- The bark is grey and flakes in longitudinal
strips when older.
- They can be found growing from Tanzania to Kwazulu-Natal,
on well-drained gravelly soil, produced from igneous rock.
- Male flowers are long spikes; creamy yellow
in colour, male flowers being longer than female flowers, produced from
October to January.
- Fruit is reddish in colour, round in shape and
slightly flattened, produced from November to March.
- Duiker, Nyala, giraffe, Bushbuck and kudu feed
on the leaves.
- Ripe fruit is eaten by birds like grey hornbills,
grey louries, pied and black collared barbets, brown headed parrots
and red-faced mousebirds.
- Animals like kudu, warthog, Vervet monkeys and
baboon; elephant feeding on bark and young shoots also eat the fruit.
- The fruit of this tree is edible, although the
skin is not eaten.
- A paste made from the leaves is used to treat
sores and abscesses.
