Transvaal Gardenia Gardenia volkensii

  • This is a semi deciduous tree, which may grow upto 8m in height.
  • This tree can be found from Angola to Kwazulu-Natal.
  • The bark is pale grey with a flaky appearance.
  • The flowers are large and white turning yellow with age.
  • Flowers are produced from July to December and fruits are produced from August to May.
  • The flowers give off a lovely sweet sent. The fruit are large round, greenish coloured balls with raised white dots on their surface.
  • Monkeys and certain specie of antelope eat the fruit and the leaves are browsed by game.
  • The roots can be burnt and the ashes are placed on the chest as a treatment for Pneumonia.
  • Epilepsy, earache and sore eyes can be treated with various parts of this tree.
