Brandybush Grewia flava

  • This is mostly found as a shrub but does grow into a small tree upto 4m tall.
  • The bark is smooth and dark grey in colour.
  • This tree grows in open deciduous woodland mainly on sandy soils and is found from Zambia to Kwazulu-Natal.
  • Kudu grey Duiker, steenbok, Nyala and giraffe all feed on the leaves and the fruit as well as certain species of bird.
  • The bark fibre may be used to make rope and a beer is brewed in certain areas from the fruit as well as a type of brandy can be distilled from the fruit.
  • The seed can be dried and crushed to be used in porridge.

The branches make good walking sticks and bushmen used to make their bows and arrows from this plant.
