Russet Bush Willow Combretum heroense

  • This is a semi deciduous tree, which grows upto 10m.
  • The bark is rough and dark grey in colour, rough and longitudinally fissured.
  • They can be found from Uganda and Kenya to Kwazulu-Natal.
  • They prefer sandy loam soils.
  • The tree produces flowers from September to March and fruits from January to June.
  • Kudu, giraffe, elephant, steenbok, impala and Nyala all feed on the leaves.
  • The wood is termite and woodborer proof and used as fence posts.
  • Boiling the fruit may make tea and an infusion of the roots is used to treat stomach problems.
  • This is a very tough and drought resistant tree and the wood is used to make high quality furniture.
