Tree Wistaria Bolusanthus speciousus

  • This is a deciduous tree.
  • It is a small to medium sized tree occurring at medium to low altitudes.
  • This tree is found in bushveld and wooded grassland and grows on a variety of soils.
  • The largest specimens are found on heavy soils found near water.
  • The bark is a black-brown colour and deeply fissured, longitudinally on the trunk.
  • The flowers of this tree are very striking being violet to blue, almost mauve in colour.
  • The seeds are small and flat and hang in clusters.
  • Vervet Monkeys eat the flower buds.
  • In the Transvaal, local people use the inner bark for treating stomach disorders.
  • The wood of this tree is very hard and termite resistant used for fence poles, tools and furniture.
  • This tree flowers from August to January and flowers between September and March.
