- This is a deciduous tree.
- It is a small to medium sized tree occurring
at medium to low altitudes.
- This tree is found in bushveld and wooded grassland
and grows on a variety of soils.
- The largest specimens are found on heavy soils
found near water.
- The bark is a black-brown colour and deeply
fissured, longitudinally on the trunk.
- The flowers of this tree are very striking being
violet to blue, almost mauve in colour.
- The seeds are small and flat and hang in clusters.
- Vervet Monkeys eat the flower buds.
- In the Transvaal, local people use the inner
bark for treating stomach disorders.
- The wood of this tree is very hard and termite
resistant used for fence poles, tools and furniture.
- This tree flowers from August to January and
flowers between September and March.
