Brown Ivory Berchenia discolor

  • This is a semi-deciduous to evergreen tree growing 20m tall.
  • They can be found growing from Ethiopia to Kwazulu-Natal, usually on well-drained soils and woodlands along drainage lines.
  • The bark is cracked into small rectangles and dark grey in colour.
  • Flowers are produced between October to January.
  • Fruits are produced between January to July and are eaten by Monkeys, baboon and other smaller and larger mammals, as well as a large variety of fruit eating birds.
  • Large ammounts of fruit are collected by people in the lowveld and stored for later use.
  • The flesh of the fruit is very high in sugar and the pulp high in vitaminC.
  • A strong alcoholic drink is also distilled from the fruit.
  • The wood is very good for making furniture.
