Brown Ivory
Berchenia discolor
- This is a semi-deciduous to evergreen tree growing
20m tall.
- They can be found growing from Ethiopia to Kwazulu-Natal,
usually on well-drained soils and woodlands along drainage lines.
- The bark is cracked into small rectangles and
dark grey in colour.
- Flowers are produced between October to January.
- Fruits are produced between January to July
and are eaten by Monkeys, baboon and other smaller and larger mammals,
as well as a large variety of fruit eating birds.
- Large ammounts of fruit are collected by people
in the lowveld and stored for later use.
- The flesh of the fruit is very high in sugar
and the pulp high in vitaminC.
- A strong alcoholic drink is also distilled from
the fruit.
- The wood is very good for making furniture.
