Black Monkey-Thorn Acacia burkei

  • This is a deciduous tree, which grows up to 25m tall.
  • The bark is dark brownish grey in colour.
  • This tree grows on a variety of soils, in thornveld, mixed woodland and rocky slopes and is found from south-eastern Zimbabwe to Kwazulu-Natal.
  • Duiker, impala, steenbok, giraffe and Nyala feed on the leaves.
  • The seeds are also very nutritious for game.
  • The wood is used for furniture and is termite resistant.
  • The tree produces flowers from October to January and fruits from December to May.
