Slender Mongoose: Herpestes sanguineus

General:

  • They can be found all over Southern Africa, where there is suitable cover, they are not found in Namibia or Southern Cape Province.
  • They are a solitary animal, feeding mainly on rodents, insects and occasionally reptiles,
  • The male weigh between 523-789g, females between 373-565g.
  • They are more than likely the most predacious of the mongoose found in this area.

Breeding:

  • A female gives birth to between 2-4 young after a gestation of around 2 months.

Predators:

  • They are more than likely taken by eagles, but do not show any fear of snakes.
