Reedbuck:
Redunca arundinum

General:
- They are also known as the common or southern
Reedbuck.
- They can be found across most of Southern Africa
and live around vleis, tall grass areas and permanent water sources.
- Females are smaller than the males who can weigh
up to 60kg.
- They are selective grazers and are usually not
territorial.
- They have 2 sets of glands one found just below
the ears and can be seen as a bare patch of skin, as well as an inguinal
gland.
- They give off a whistle-like alarm call.
Breeding:
- Females give birth to normally 1 young after
a gestation period of 7.5 months and will breed all year round.
Predators:
- Lion, leopard, hyena, and wild dog prey upon
them.
- If Reedbuck suspect the presence of a predator,
they sometimes pretend to be eating, looking for the slightest movement
in their environment. If the predator moves they will dash off at speed.
