In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

- One male rhino south of Sandy Patch, animal lying down
- One male Leopard - Mafufanyane - open area Impala Plain

- Four bull buffalo lying down at Tree-on-the-road Pan
- Nkuhuma pride with fourteen cubs eastern side of Long Pole; animals lying down
- One male rhino drinking water Jordaan's animal moving north from the dam
- One female Wild dog and the tree puppies at Nkorho camp; animals lying down

3 January
AM
- Nkuhuma pride with fourteen cubs - they moved from Long Pole east back to Manyeleti properties
- One female Leopard - White Cloth - animal lying down on top of Marula tree
- Two male cheetahs on top of the dam wall; Cheetah Plain Pan
- Breeding herd of elephant drinking water at Buffalo Pan at Cheetah Plain

- One male Leopard - Ncila - north of Piet Danhauser; animal walking on the road
- One male rhino - Short Horn - animal lying down at Brown Ivory
- One female Leopard - Kurula - coming from west cross Triple M into Vuyatela

4 January
AM
- Two Ostrich male and a female in open area; Cheetah Plain
- Two male lions - Robson's pride - from Ottawa; north of Singita Lodge
- Three female lions lying down east of Djuma dam
- One male rhino and two females with a calf north of Guarrie pan

PM
- Breeding herd of elephant north of Chitwa cut line; animals moving north towards Torchwood camp

5 January
AM
- Two male lions from Robson's pride lying down east of Cheetah Plain Pan
- 21 bull buffalo lying down in the water at Vuyatela dam

PM
- Robson's pride same place as in the morning; lying down
- One male elephant coming from Kruger towards the place where the Robson's pride lying down
- One male rhino north of second rock; animals moving south

6 January
AM
- Lots of general game including hippo

PM
- 1 male elephant found at Buffelshoek dam.
- 4 male buffalo found at Twin Dam; enjoying the mud.

7 January
AM
- 2 male lions found at Quarantine.
- Small breeding herd of elephants found crossing into Buffelshoek from Western Gowrie.

PM
- 2 male lions still on Quarantine.
- 1 male hippo found at Buffelshoek dam.
-small breeding herd of elephants found near Cheetah Cutline, animals feeding.
-1 male rhino found on Euphorbia road near the small pan.
