In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

PM
UNBELIEVABLE! We saw a herd of water buffalo numbering between 2 and 3 hundred. Some were huge! Then we saw a herd of 9 elephants. One came up to the vehicle and was so close that I could have reached out and touched his trunk. We also saw a lot of Impala's and antelope along with some prairie dogs and a mongoose. After sundown we saw a hippo in the water, two lions mating and a Cheetah. Near the end of our drive we saw two large giraffes. What a great drive!

AM
On the drive and we first saw a line of elephants cross in front of us on the trail. Then our driver, Chris took off and we drove fast on a wild and bumpy ride. He had received word that there was a lon kill. We arrived to see 3 female lions eating on a freshly killed giraffe. A little later the two lions from last night joined then and even later two more lady lions came with 9 cubs. They all ate and ate and ate. We stayed for over an hour and then left ourselves. We saw three male Rhinos eating and stopped to take some pictures before driving on to an open area where we had a breakfast bar and some hot chocolate or coffee. On our way back to camp we saw three elephants - two adults and a baby - at the watering hole drinking.
In the water was a hippo just relaxing in the water.
We approached a lone lioness that growled and let us know we were not welcomed, so our driver respected her wishes and drove on.
Back at camp we saw a giraffe at the local watering hole.
What an incredible morning drive.

PM
During the afternoon drive we first saw a herd of Water Buck. Then we saw three old male water buffalo.
Short time later we saw a single lion drinking from the pond. He also yawned and I got a great shot of that.
Then we saw a Kudu, then two Saddle Billed storks at the watering hole where the Vuyatela Cam is.
We then came across a one year old female leopard. She was beautiful. So now we've seen the Big Five.
As we were coming into the camp we saw a rabbit and a beautiful owl.

AM
The last game drive was a good one. We saw zebras, wildebeests, and giraffes. We checked out the lion kill and found the lions still eating on the ribs of the giraffe.
We also were fortunate to see five Cheetahs, two males, one mother and two cubs.

Steve Varro - September guest to Djuma - kindly wrote this account of these days.
