In
the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five"
or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular
animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant,
rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five"
(the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote
the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately
the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

PM
-1 Elephant bull was found on Cheetah Cutline pushing over a Torchwood
Tree.
-1 Female Leopard (Beacon Female) was found on the Eastern side
of Nyala Dam. She was hunting and we stayed with her as she first
made an unsuccessful attempt to catch a Scrub Hare and shortly
after unluckily, just missing out on the chance to kill a Steenbok.
She was left to herself resting in the riverbed.
A breeding herd of Buffalo were found at Torchwood waterhole.
30 June

-2 Rhino bulls were found near rubbing post dam. They were grazing
towards the east.

-Late into the morning drive, 4 Lionesses and 2 large males (Nkuhuma
Pride) were found north of Wildebeest open area. They were resting
close to the riverbed.
Sadly, we got a report from the neighbouring reserve this morning
that the son of the White Cloth female Leopard was found dead
at the base of a Marula tree. The tracks told the story of the
events that lead to his death. The Styx Pride Females had been
feeding on a Giraffe Kill in the vicinity and after moving off
from the kill had come across the Leopards. The cub had climbed
a small Marula tree, that was small enough for the Lions to climb
and the scuff marks on the ground told of a fight that had lasted
some time. The 2 Leopards were found at the base of this Marula
Tree yesterday morning with his mother by his side. He was unable
to move himself. After checking on him this morning it was found
that he had passed away. He was 18 months old and had provided
us with great viewing over his short life. The White Cloth female
looked unharmed.

They were moving north and eventually crossed the boundary into
the Manyeleti Game Reserve where they were heard vocalizing after
dark.

east of Aubrey's Rd. It was resting on a fallen tree before moving
to get a higher vantage point on top of a termite mound.
-1 Rhino bull was found at 3 in a row Pan.
