In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

22 June
PM
-2 Leopards (White Cloth and her Cub) were found near The Mluwanini riverbed. They were looking well fed and were moving west. They spotted a herd of waterbuck and the cub took the opportunity to practice his stalking skills, but was spotted by the waterbuck who fled once they sensed danger.
-A breeding herd of Buffalo were found moving south on the eastern bank of the Mluwanini riverbed.
-2 Rhinos were found drinking at 3 pan.

23 June
AM
-2 large male Leopards (Mafufanyane and the Jordaan's male) were found on Zoë's road having a territorial stand-off. After growling and scent marking over each other's scent marking's, they moved off in different directions.
-1 Female Leopard (Karula) and her 2 cubs were found feeding on a Duiker carcass near Philemon's Dip.
-6 Lionesses (Styx Pride) were found moving southwards towards buffalo dam. They had blood on their faces and it looked as though they may have been feeding on something small shortly before they were found

PM
-2 Male Leopards (Jordaan's and Mafufanyane males) were found again this evening still locked in their efforts to challenge each other's territory. They were not seen to attack each other but there was still plenty of vocalizing that took place.
-1 Male Leopard (Newington male) was found at 3 pans moving north and east. He was left lying at the base of a Greenhorn tree near Jacobin Camp.
-A large herd of Buffalo were found moving briskly into the reserve near the Mluwanini Riverbed.
-1 Male Lion was found west of Nyala Dam moving west.

24 June
AM
-2 large herds of Buffalo were found on this drive; one on Cheetah Cutline, which eventually moved to Buffelshoek Dam to drink and the other on the Euphorbia Road.
-1 Male Leopard (Jordaan's Male) was found on Euphorbia Drive, moving east inside the riverbed.

PM
-4 Elephant bulls were found at Bush Lodge feeding on the fire-break.
-A breeding herd of Buffalo were found at Buffelshoek Dam moving north.
-1 Female Leopard (Karula) was found close to the Buffalo moving west in the firebreak.

25 June
AM
-A breeding herd of Buffalo were found drinking at Buffelshoek Dam, Three Hippos were watching closely from inside the Dam.
-1 Female Leopard (White Cloth) was found at Torchwood Dam moving west.
-1 young male Leopard was found west of Buffelshoek Dam moving south-east.
-A breeding herd of Elephant were found east of 2nd Rock.
