In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

28 May
PM
-2 Rhino bulls were found at Khaya Manzi Dam moving south.
-4 Lionesses (Nkuhuma) were found on the clearing south of Sussen's Dam, towards the end of Drive.
-1 female Leopard (Karula) and her 2 cubs were found in the Mhuluwathi riverbed. They were all looking well fed. They were left to themselves as it was getting dark and the cubs are not yet old enough to view with the spot light.

29 May
AM
-1 Female Leopard (Karula) and her 2 cubs were found at Chela Pan. The female was stalking a Duiker, which had strayed close to the pan, but the Duiker's sense's were too good and ran off after becoming aware of the Leopard. They later moved into the riverbed where the bush was too thick to follow.
-1 Male Cheetah was found at Big Dam, calling frantically for his brother. He was left after he crossed the boundary into the Manyeleti Game reserve, still calling.
-2 Rhino bulls were found on Dolerite rd. moving south.
-A few groups of Buffalo bulls were found around Vuyatela

1 June
PM
-1 Buffalo bull was found near Rhino Pan resting in the grass.
-3 Hyenas were found moving north on Euphorbia drive.
-1 Young male Leopard (Son of the White Cloth Female) was found outside Bush Lodge. He was left moving eastwards into thick bush.

2 June
AM
-2 Rhino Bulls were found close to the gate. Both animals were fast asleep and didn't look like moving anywhere soon.
-2 Elephant bulls were found on Philemon's Cutline feeding.
-2 Male Lions and a lioness (Nkuhuma Pride) were found feeding on young Giraffe on the Manyeleti boundary near Galago.
-The White Cloth female and her cub were found at Bush Lodge. They were moving east and were left heading southwards towards the southern boundary of the reserve.
-A breeding herd of Buffalo were found grazing on the main road close to the Mluwanini Riverbed.

PM
-1 Elephant Bull was found with 3 Buffalo Bulls at Philemon's Dip.
-2 Lions and 2 Lionesses (Nkuhuma Pride) were found lying about at the Giraffe carcass near Galago.
-1 big male Leopard (unidentified) was found west of Vuyatela. He was moving in a south and west direction, and eventually crossed the western boundary of the reserve.

3 June
AM
-A large herd of Buffalo were found on Euphorbia drive grazing.
-The 2 Leopard cubs of the Karula female were found on Weaver's Nest Rd. They were fairly nervous of the vehicles with their mother not being there and they were left to themselves.
-1 Elephant bull was found feeding at Philemon's Dip.
3 June PM
-A breeding herd of Buffalo were found at 1st Rock moving northwards.
-The 7 lionesses of the Styx Pride were found moving westwards near the Fig Tree.
-A breeding herd of Elephants was found at Twin Dams.

4 June
AM
-4 Lionesses and 2 Male Lions (Nkuhuma Pride) were found moving northwards away from Galago Camp. They later crossed the Boundary of the reserve into the Manyeleti.
-4 Elephant Bulls were found at Torchwood waterhole drinking.
-The Hyena Den on Euphorbia Drive was active.

PM
-1 Male Leopard (Ncila) was found near Cheetah Plain Pan, moving north.
He eventually moved onto the clearing west of Kudu Corner after a couple of unsuccessful hunting attempts on Duiker and Warthog. He was looking well fed.
-A group of Buffalo bulls was found east of Djuma Dam, grazing.
-A group of Elephant bulls was found near 3 pans.
-7 Lionesses (Styx Pride) were found at Twin Dams moving north. They were left heading towards the western side of Vuyatela Camp.

5 June
AM
-1 Male Cheetah was found lying in the open grassland of Cheetah Plain. He was calling for another Cheetah, perhaps hid coalition partner.
-1 Lioness (Unidentified) was found at Cheetah Plain Pan moving north and east. She was an old female and was looking very hungry.
-A breeding herd of Buffalo were found drinking at Buffelshoek dam.
-An Elephant Bull was found at Cheetah Pan feeding.
