In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

24 May
PM
-There were a number of Elephant bulls located throughout the reserve and a nursery herd of Elephants found close to the gate.
-2 Rhino bulls were found near Tree-House dam moving south, and a lone Rhino bull found at Jordaan's dam.
-A rare sighting of a Serval cat was reported at Guarrie Pan.
-The Hyena Den at 1st rock was a hive of activity with adults and young found socializing around the den.
-A lone Buffalo bull was found near Torchwood Camp.

25 May
AM
-1 young male Leopard (The son of the White Cloth female) was found on Euphorbia road moving eastwards along the Donga. He tried hunting birds without success, before going to rest for the morning on a termite mound.
-A large Elephant bull was found feeding at Bush Lodge.

PM
-There were 3 sightings of Rhino on this drive, of which all of them were in the Buffelshoek area. A total of 8 Rhinos were reported.
-A female Leopard (White Cloth) was seen briefly, close to the Mluwanini riverbed. She looked to be hunting but we were unable to follow her as she crossed our southern boundary.

26 May
AM
-1 Male Cheetah was seen resting on Cheetah Plains. After a while he started moving westwards away from the open plain.
-A large herd of Buffalo were found north of Kudu Corner on the Kruger Park Boundary.
-1 Elephant Bull was seen at Buffalo Dam.
-1 Hippo was found grazing outside the water at Djuma Dam.

PM
-1 Male Cheetah was found at Cheetah Plains lying down on a termite mound. He later moved northwards towards Kudu Corner.
-2 Elephants were found at 3 in a row pan.
-The Hyena den at 1st rock was active.
-1 Buffalo bull was found moving north from Torchwood Dam.

27 May
AM
-2 Male Cheetahs were found at Khaya Manzi waterhole, they moved northwards and eventually lay down on the Brown Ivory Clearing.
-1 Male Leopard (Son of the Beacon female) was found at Sussen's Dam and was followed for some time before coming to rest at Bushbuck dam.
-1 Male Lion (unidentified) was found east of 1st rock.

27 May
PM
-3 Rhinos were found on the Manyeleti boarder, north of Big Dam.
-A breeding herd of Buffalo were found close to Kudu Corner.
-A single male Lion (unidentified) was found south of Torchwood Camp. He looked very thin and his face was full of recent cuts, possibly a result of being without a coalition partner, and not having a territory of his own. He was left moving south.
-A special sighting of a Small Spotted Genet was had on Euphorbia Drive.

28 May
AM
-1 Big Male Lion (Nkuhuma Male) was found on the main road at the Mluwanini River. He was frantically following the trail of some females which had moved north along the river towards 1st Rock. He was roaring every 5 minutes or so. He was eventually left near Guarrie pan moving into thick bush.
-4 Lionesses (Nkuhuma Pride) were found at 1st Rock moving north. They were eventually lost to thick bush near Cheetah pan.
-1 Elephant bull was found on Drakensberg Drive feeding.
-1 Serval cat was found near Torchwood waterhole. This was a real treat especially to see it in daylight.
