In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

-4 Buffalo bulls were found at Buffelshoek Dam moving south away from the water.

PM
-3 Rhino bulls were found close to Sussen's dam, grazing in the middle of the clearing.
-3 Leopards were found feeding on the Kudu kill north of Nyala dam. The Beacon female and her cub had been joined by a young male, who was identified as her cub from her previous litter. This young Leopard is about 3 years old and much bigger that his mother. He was keeping the other 2 Leopards and warning them off with deep vocalizations. The other 2 Leopards lay and watched a short distance away as their meal was devoured.

6 May

-The 7 Lionesses and 2 big males were found on Dolerite road. The pride was separated at first but all came together and all lay down in the shade to rest close to the "pump-house".
