In
the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five"
or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular
animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant,
rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five"
(the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote
the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately
the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

April
AM
- A mating pair of Lions (Nkuhuma pride) was found engaged at
the Sandy Patch open area. At the same time a large male Leopard
(Mafufuyani) was moving eastwards towards the Lions without any
idea of their presence.
PM
-1 Male Leopard (Mafufuyani) was found on Philemon's Cutline sleeping.
He eventually woke and moved south towards the main rd.
-A Breeding herd of Elephants were found on the Vuyatela access
rd moving towards Sidney's dam.
12 April
AM
-2 Lionesses and 2 male cubs (Approx. 7 months old) were found
South of Big Dam. They were moving slowly South East. They were
following a scent trail and stopped often to test the smells in
the air. Although it was already quite hot, they continued pushing
on until they found a small herd of Waterbuck. They tried stalking
the waterbuck, but were spotted and were forced to give up.
-3 Rhinos were found north of Nyala Dam.
-A young Male Leopard (Son of Beacon Female) was found west of
Nyala Dam, feeding on a Kudu Carcass.
-7 Elephant Bulls were found mud bathing near Milkberry.
PM
-2 Cheetah males were found near Lion Pan. They were moving slowly
eastwards towards the Kruger Boundary. They eventually went and
lay down on a termite mound to rest and survey the open area.
-3 Buffalo Bulls were found at Nyala Dam resting.
13 April
AM
-2 Lionesses and 2 male cubs (Milkberry Pride) were found at Kudu
Corner lying down.
-3 Rhinos were found on Dolerite Rd moving slowly south.
-A small herd of Elephants were found close to Vuyatela.
PM
-1 Male Lion (Nkuhuma pride) was found lying on the Twin Dams
Dam Wall. After dark he got up and moved towards Vuyatela and
was left moving north from there.
-The Hyena den at 1st rock provided some great entertainment for
the guests.
14 April
PM
-5 Lionesses from the Nkuhuma pride were found lying down at the
inlet of Jordaan's Dam. They were looking full and were left resting
there.
-3 Elephants were found east of Milkberry on the Kruger fire-break.
15 April
AM
-The White Cloth female and cub were found west of the airstrip,
when 2 Hyenas were found staring into a Knobthorn tree on the
fire-break.
The cub had been "treed" by the 2 Hyenas and he was
waiting patiently for them to leave whilst mom watched from a
distance.
The Hyenas soon lost interest and the cub was able to rejoin his
mum and both Leopards moved west along the fire-break until eventually
finding a suitable tree to rest in north of Torchwood dam.
PM
-The male cub of the White Cloth female Leopard was found on Pipe-Line
Rd resting on a termite mound.
-3 Lionesses from the Nkuhuma pride were found at Jordaan's dam
resting.
16 April
AM
-1 Male and 7 female Lions (Nkuhuma pride) were found resting
close to Hardekool camp. They all had full stomachs.
-1 Male Lion (Nkuhuma Pride) was found feeding on the remains
of a Waterbuck bull.
PM
-The 8 members of the Nkuhuma Pride were found still resting near
Hardekool Camp.
-2 Buffalo bulls were found wallowing in Vuyatela Dam.
-3 Rhino Bulls were found near Sandy Patch.
-A breeding herd of Elephant were found on the Long Pole Rd moving
north.
17 April
AM
-2 Elephant bulls were found feeding close to the Buffelshoek
airstrip.
