In
the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five"
or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular
animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant,
rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five"
(the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote
the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately
the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

-3 Rhinos were seen near Khaya Manzi waterhole grazing.
-1 male Lion was found lying down on the Jordaan's dam wall.
-1 Male Leopard (Newington) was found resting in a Knobthorn tree
near the Kaalkol open area.
PM
-The same male Lion from the Nkuhuma pride was found moving west
from Jordaan's Dam.
-A breeding herd of Buffalo were found heading south from Cheetah
Pan.
26 February

-4 Buffalo bulls were found drinking at Buffelshoek dam.
-2 bull Elephants were found on Cheetah Cutline.
PM
-3 Rhino were found close to Sandy Patch.
-4 Bull Elephants were found drinking at Buffelshoek dam.
27 February
AM
-The Nkuhuma pride was found resting close to Vuyatela Camp staff
village. Everyone was on high alert as to the Lions presence.
-18 Buffalo bulls were found at rubbing post dam.
-3 Rhinos were found at sandy patch.
PM
-2 male Cheetahs (eastern males) were found on the Kaalkol clearing
resting.
-The Nkuhuma pride of Lions was found in the same place as on
the morning drive.
28 February

-The Nkuhuma pride was found on Dolerite road resting. At the
moment, it seems as though this pride moves mostly after dark
and rests away from the heat during the day.
-3 Rhinos were seen near Nyala Dam.
-4 Buffalo Bulls were found drinking at Buffelshoek dam.
PM
-8 Buffalo Bulls were found drinking at Buffelshoek dam.
-A breeding herd of Buffalo were found close to the Beacon on
long-pole-road.
-The young cub of the Beacon female was found near Jordaan's Dam.
1 March
AM
-The Nkuhuma Pride was found resting south of Galago Camp.
-1 Female Leopard (Karula) was found on the Buffelshoek boundary
road moving west.
-The white-cloth female Leopard and her cub were found resting
in a Marula tree in the Mluwanini riverbed.
