In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

8 February
AM
-A breeding herd of Buffalo were seen at Kudu Corner.

PM
-2 Lionesses (not seen at djuma before) and their two cubs of different ages approx. 6 and 8 months of age were found near 3-Pan. One of the Lionesses killed a large Leopard tortoise and gave it to the older of the cubs to devour.

-2 Buffalo Bulls were seen at the Mluwanini crossing.

9 February
AM
-1 Female Leopard (Safari female) was found the MMM junction. She moved South across our boundary but it was great to see her doing as well as ever.
-The Beacon female and cub leopard were found at Jordaan's dam, moving west.

PM
-The Beacon female Leopard was found again but this time without her cub. She was relaxing in a Knobthorn thicket near the Manyeleti Boundary.
-2 Male Cheetahs (Eastern Males) were found sleeping at Cheetah Plains with full bellies.
-6 Buffalo Bulls were found drinking at Nyala dam.
-1 Bull Elephant was found on Cheetah Cutline.

10 February
AM
-The 3 lionesses and their 2 cubs were found at the north eastern corner of the reserve. They later moved into the Kruger Park.
-3 Rhino Bulls were found at Big Dam.
-1 Elephant Bull was found at Cheetah Plains.

14 February
PM
-3 Lions (2 Males and a Female) from the Nkuhuma pride were found at Sidney's dam. The males were chasing after the female who seemed less than impressed by the males' advances. After the female left the area the 2 males lay on the open area near the dam and began roaring.
-3 Lionesses from the Nkuhuma pride were found at the MMM junction moving to the north along the road.
-There were many Elephant seen throughout the reserve.

15 February
AM
-1 female Leopard (Xiluva) was found on Vrystaat clearing. This young female from the beacon female's previous litter is close to 3 years in age. She was in a very playful mood and was jumping into every tree she passed.
-2 Leopards (White Cloth) and her cub were found moving north along Cheetah Cutline. They later moved off the road and into the woodland where the mother launched herself into a Marula tree and was left resting.

PM
-3 Rhinos were found at rubbing post dam.
-A large group of Buffalo bulls were found drinking at Sidney's dam.
-The son of the White Cloth female Leopard was found in the same area as the morning drive. His mother had left him in order to hunt and he was laying in wait patiently for his mother's return.
-Elephant bulls were seen all over the reserve, most of them eating Marula.

16 February
AM
- The white cloth Female Leopard and her cub were seen on Pipeline road moving west. They would climb a tree from time to time to get a better view of their surroundings.
-2 Males and 3 Females from the Nkuhuma pride were found west of Nyala dam.
-Elephants were seen all over the reserve.

PM
-The 2 Nkuhuma pride Males were found in the same are as on the morning drive. The female had left the area.
-6 Buffalo bulls were seen at Nyala Dam.
-Many sightings of Elephants were reported all over the reserve.

17 February
AM
-6 female Lions from the Styx pride were found west of Kudu Corner on the firebreak.
-1 Female Cheetah was found on the Galago entrance road. She stalked a herd of impala and after a short dash for one of the youngster, which she missed, she lay down to catch her breath.
-3 Rhinos were found south of the Sandy Patch.

PM
-the 6 Styx pride females were found again close to where they had been seen earlier in the day. They had been joined by the pride male (Split Rock Male). The pride started moving ina southerly direction towards the Kaalkol area.
-The White Cloth female was found as one of the vehicles was returning to camp. The Leopard was seen where the vehicles park after game drives. She moved out passing the lodge gates and continued north.

18 February
AM
-3 Rhino were located on the Buffelshoek boundary near Cheetah Cutline.
-5 Lionesses (Nkuhuma pride) were found resting on the Bushbuck dam wall.
-Breeding herd of Buffalo was found north of Big dam.
