In
the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five"
or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular
animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant,
rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five"
(the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote
the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately
the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

-1 Leopard (Inchela) at Cheetah Plain Pan - Lying down.
-Breeding herd of Elephant on the Western side of Cheetah Plain
Pan - Moving South.
-Breeding herd of 50 Buffalo - Moving South on Cheetah Plain into
Mala Mala.
-2 Elephant bulls to the South of Kudu Corner - Foraging.
-3 Lions 1 Female and 2 Cubs (Sandypatch) at 2nd Rock - Lying
down.
-1 Leopard (Karula) was seen at Chitwa Cutline - headed north
into western Gowrie.
-Breeding herd of Elephant (50) at Impala Plain - heading west
and foraging.
-7 Lions 5 females and 2 males (Kuhuma Pride) Eastern side of
Buffelshoek - Lying down.
-1 Leopard (Mafufuyani) west of Sandypatch - lying next to a kill
resting.
PM
-4 Cheetahs North of Nkorho - Killed baby Impala, rested and started
to eat.
-7 Lions 5 females and 2 males (Kuhuma Prides) Vrystaat Clearing,
- lying down.
-1 Leopard (Mafufuyani) on western side of Sandypatch - Lying
in the road.
-Breeding herd of Elephant South of Sandypatch - foraging.
-4 Buffalo bulls on Philemon's Cutline - Lying down.

-1 Leopard (Whitecloth) on Kudu Road West of the power lines -
killed a Warthog piglet.
-1 Rhino was seen at Sussen's - foraging and marking territory.
-4 Cheetahs West of Green Pan - Lying down on the Western side
of the power lines.
-2 Lion males seen at Rhino Cutline close to Gowrie Main - Lying
down.
-15 Buffalo Bulls at Manza Pan - Drinking.
PM
-10 Buffalo bulls were seen at Djuma Dam - Drinking.
-4 Cheetah western side of Green Pan - Killed a Steenbok and a
Leopard (Whitecloth) chased the Cheetah off and stole the kill.
-1 Bull Elephant, North of Gowrie Main close to Rhino Pan - Foraging.
-2 Lions, 1 male 1 female South of Rhino Pan close to Gowrie Main
- Lying down.
8 January

-4 Cheetah Eastern side of Bush Lodge close to Central Road -
on a kill, young Impala.
-1 Leopard (Whitecloth) on Kudu Road - Killed a Serval kitten
and the other two kittens got away.
-1 Lion (Sandypatch) Western side of Cruise Camp - lying in the
middle of the road.
-1 Tusker Elephant East of Rhino Cutline on Kudu Road - foraging.
-7 Lions (Kuhuma Pride) Western side of Hunters Moon - Lying down.
-8 Buffalo Bulls at Djuma Dam - Lying down.

-1 Leopard young female was at Tamboti Dam - on a Grey Duiker
kill.
-Breeding herd of Elephant was at 3 House Dam - moving south and
foraging.
-14 Buffalo bulls was seen at Zoë's Road - heading South
and foraging.

-2 Rhinos seen at Impala Plain - foraging.
-1 Leopard (Karula) was seen west of Twin Dams - lying on top
of a mound.
-1 Leopard (Whitecloth) on Moreleni - moving in to Torchwood.
-1 Male Lion (1 eye) North of Nkorho - Resting, near the waterhole.
10 January

-5 Lions, 3 females and 2 males were seen on the Western side
of Dannhauser in Buffelshoek - Lying down.
-2 Rhinos, 1 female and 1 calf North of Big Dam inside Manyeleti
- Foraging.
-1 Leopard (Whitecloth) on the Eastern side of Chitwa Cutline
- moving west.
-10 Buffalo bull was seen 3 House Dam - Drinking.
-2 Wilddog on the Western side of Jacobin - eating an Impala.

-3 Lions, 1 female and 2 cubs (Sandypatch) East of Rhino Cutline
near Buffelshoek Boundary - Lying down.
-2 Rhino Bulls at Buffelshoek Dam - Drinking
-2 Lions, 1 male and 1 female (Kuhuma Pride) West of Kaya Manzi
- Mating.
-2 Lions, 1 male and 1 female (Kuhuma Pride) to the North of the
other two - mating.
-1 bull Elephant - Eastern side of Kaya Manzi pump - Foraging.
-1 Hippo in front of Bush Lodge in the spotlight - Foraging.
