In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

11 September
AM
At the North Rock clearing, two Leopards, Whitecloth and her cub, were seen. Whitecloth was resting in a tree while her cub was resting on a termite mound.
Two male Cheetahs were spotted resting at Quarantine.
At Mluwanini a breeding herd of Buffalo were moving in an easterly direction.
Four elephant bulls were seen at the Fig Tree area.
Five lions were at Hyena Dam where they had killed a Wildebeest. They still consisted of the Buffelshoek pride and the Kudu Corner female.

PM
A female leopard, Karula, was at Twin Dams calling and moving South.
Six Rhinos were seen this afternoon at Kudu corner, moving west. There was one male and five females.
A breeding herd of Buffalo was also seen on the drive.
A relaxed Honey Badger was seen north of Kudu corner.

12 September
AM
The Buffelshoek Pride of Lions was seen again, this time sleeping at Cobus se Dam.
At Cheetah Plains, a Rhino cow and her calf were spotted.

PM
At Tortoise Pan a Rhino bull was sharpening his horn and feeding.
The Buffelshoek pride, four lions, was found feeding on an Elephant bull that had recently died. There was very little eaten from the carcass and would be a predator hot-spot for the next 2 weeks..
A breeding herd of Buffalo were at Rhino Pan sleeping.

13 September
AM
Five Lions were seen this morning from the Sandy Patch and the Buffelshoek Pride feeding on the Elephant carcass..
At Cheetah Cutline a breeding herd of Buffalo were seen.

PM
Once again, five Lions, Buffelshoek Pride and Sandy Patch, were seen this afternoon.

14/09/06
AM
An eventful morning at Quarantine. Three Leopards were seen there; the son and daughter of Beacon as well as another female Leopard, Karula. Karula was snarling at the other two Leopards, with a Hyena watching closely. They later moved off in opposite directions. We stayed with the 2 siblings and followed them into the Mluwathi riverbed where they played for ages. We haven't seen these two together in months but stood their ground against the older and larger female, Karula.

14 September
PM
At Bush Lodge the Styx Pride, five Lions, were hunting Buffalo and roaring. There was also a breeding herd of Elephants feeding at the waterhole.
A breeding herd of Buffalo were at Djuma Dam.

16 September
AM
Five Lions were spotted. Four, Buffelshoek Pride at Elephant Kill and one Sandy Patch Lion was at Cobus se Dam.
At Big Dam two Cheetah males were found stalking a herd of Impala. They used their numbers to form an ambush and within minutes were undirected on either side of the herd. They attacked together and were successful.

Three male Lions, Buffelshoek Pride, were West of Cobus se Dam at the Elephant Kill feeding.
Four bull Elephants were dinking at Kudu Corner.
Two female Lions, Styx Pride, were sleeping at Tree House Dam.

17 September
AM
At Hornbill Nest two Rhino bulls were feeding.
Three Buffalo bulls were spotted at Bush Lodge an six were seen at Kudu Corner.

PM
A Leopard, Whitecloth's cub, was sleeping at Euphorbia big trees.
The Styx Pride were seen, one female Lion was at Djuma Dam and six females were seen at Gowrie main road.

18 September
AM
The Buffelshoek Pride, four Lions, was at Cobus se Dam moving north.
On Cheetah Cutline, there were three Buffalo bulls and two Rhino bulls.

PM
A female Leopard, Karula, was at the Braai site at Vuyatela, where it had killed an Impala.
North of Three Pans two Elephant bulls were seen and at Djuma Dam a breeding herd of Buffalo were drinking.
