In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

22 August
AM
One lioness from the Sandy Patch Pride was found at Sandy Patch; she was calling and moving north. It looks as though she is carrying cubs at the moment.
One female cheetah with her cub (a male of about 18 months) was seen hunting impala just north of Buffelshoek Dam.
Three lions from the Collar Pride were found at Bushbuck Dam. They were lying just north of our boundary.

PM
One lioness from the Sandy Patch pride was seen on Impala Road.
Six hyenas were seen in Kaalkol Open Area feeding on the elephant carcass. The elephant died there on the 12th of this month.

23 August
AM
One lion (the Old Eastern male) was seen at Cheetah Plain Pan. He was moving south and was scent marking while he crossed into Mala Mala.
Four rhino were found on Cheetah cutline.

PM
Two cheetahs (a female and her male cub) were seen hunting impala at Hardekool Clearing.
One female leopard (Beacon) was seen in Vrystaat Clearing. She moved north and killed a scrub hare just south of Jordaan's Dam.
One male leopard (Mafufanyane) was seen at Treehouse Dam. He killed a steenbok and dragged it into thick bush before starting to feed.
A breeding herd of buffalo was seen on Gowrie Main Road. They were just settling down to sleep.

24 August
AM
One male leopard (Mafufanyane) was seen at Treehouse Dam. . He had finished feeding on a steenbok and moved slowly north before settling to rest on Philemon's cutline.
Two large male cheetahs were found at 3 in a Row Pans. They were scent marking and moving west.
The Old Eastern male lion was found sleeping on Cheetah Plains.
A breeding herd of buffalo were seen on Djuma Driveway. They moved to Torchwood Dam fir a drink.

PM
One male lion (Old Eastern) was seen on Cheetah Plains. He was laying down for most of the drive and sat up to groom.
One male leopard (Mafufanyane) was found on Impala Road. He moved west until crossing the boundary south of Gowrie Gate.
One hyena was seen in Kaalkol Open Area feeding on the elephant carcass alongside some Black Backed and Side Striped jackals.

25 August
AM
Two male cheetahs were seen at Champagne Pan. They were the same two that were seen yesterday and had moved some 10km overnight. It looked as though they had fed on something small. They moved north scent marking on trees in the clearing.
Two breeding herds of buffalo were seen. One was at Rhino Pan and was moving south east and the other was at the Airstrip and was moving north west.
Elephant bulls were seen all over the reserve.

PM
White Cloth (female leopard) was seen at Djuma Dam. She was looking thin and was hunting a duiker without success. She was finally seen killing a bushbuck behind Bush Lodge Staff Village.
One rhino bull was seen feeding at Treehouse Dam.
One rhino cow was seen with her calf at Twin Dams. They were nervous of the vehicles so were left in peace.

26 August
AM
Elephant bulls were seen feeding in Torchwood Area.
A breeding herd of buffalo were found drinking at Buffelshoek Dam.

PM
Two adult male cheetahs were seen on the Manyeleti Boundary. They moved into the Manyeleti and were being watched closely by a wildebeest.
Two elephant bulls were seen at Big Dam feeding.
There was quite a special sighting at Squirrels view - a honey badger was seen feeding.

27 August
AM
Two male cheetahs were seen at Kobus se Dam. They were scent marking and moving south.
One female cheetah with her cub (a male of about 18 months) was found at Terminalia Clearing climbing trees and termite mounds in search for prey.
Four lions from the Collar Pride (3 males and 1 female) were found lying down in the river bed at Twin Dams Road.
Three rhinos (a male, a female and a juvenile) were seen moving north along Central Road.
Five elephant bulls were seen feeding just south of Gowrie Pan.
A breeding herd of buffalo were found feeding and moving west.
