In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

15 August
PM
The Collar Pride (3 lions and 1 lioness) was seen with 2 lionesses from the Sandy Patch Pride at Bushbuck Dam. They were all lying on the dam wall.
One young male leopard was seen just west of Hunter's Moon Camp trying to get close to some impalas.
One male rhino (Short Horn) was found east of Galago Camp moving north.
A breeding herd of buffalo were seen drinking at Galago Dam.
Two elephant bulls were found feeding at Nyala Dam. They were heading west.

16 August
AM
A breeding herd of buffalo were seen at Nyala Dam. They were heading south into Chitwa.
Two elephant bulls were seen moving south just north of Nyala Dam along East West cutline.
One female rhino with 3 male youngsters were found lying down on East West cutline just north west of Nyala Dam.

PM
A breeding herd of buffalo were found at Buffelshoek Dam. They were all over the dam wall, some were drinking, some feeding and some had just started to head south.
One male rhino (Short Horn) was found lying down on Impala Plain.
Two elephant bulls were found at Gowrie Dam heading east.

17 August
AM
A breeding herd of buffalo were found lying down inside Vuyatela on Central Road just west of Chitwa cutline.
One rhino bull was seen moving west along Djuma Dam Road.
A male cheetah was found just south of Bush Lodge moving towards Chitwa.

PM
The Collar Pride of lions (3 males and 1 female) was found lying down by 1st Rock. They started to move west.
Eight lionesses (the Styx Pride) were found on Djuma Driveway, they were moving north east.

18 August
AM
A breeding herd of buffalo were found moving north at Cheetah Pan
Three rhinos (a male, a female and a young calf) were found standing very still on Pipeline Road.
Elephant bulls were spotted all over the reserve.
One leopard (Jordaan's male) was found at Gowrie Dam. He was very skittish.

PM
Three lions and one lioness, making the Collar Pride, were found lying down with one lioness from the Sandy Patch Pride at Sussen's Dam.

19 August
AM
Three rhino were found sleeping on Pipeline Road. There was a female, a male and one young calf.

PM
White Cloth (female leopard) was seen unsuccessfully hunting duiker just north of 1st Rock.

20 August
AM
One leopard (the daughter of Beacon) was found at Buffelshoek Dam. She was moving south through the woodland.

PM
One female cheetah with her cub (a male) was found feeding on a steenbok at Marula Pan.
A breeding herd of buffalo were seen drinking from the pan at Bush Lodge.

21 August
AM
A female cheetah with her cub (male) was seen laying down at North Rock.
One rhino bull was found grazing at Cheetah Pan.
Buffalo bulls were seen at Bush Lodge.

PM
One leopard (Beacon, a female) was found at Sussen's Dam. he was lactating and probably has cubs again! She killed a scrub hare and fed on it next to Sussen's Dam.
Two leopards (White Cloth and her cub) were found at Cheetah Pan. White Cloth was hunting duiker on the fire break but was not successful.
