In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

27 July
AM
One male leopard, the son of White Cloth, was seen at the Fig Tree resting on a termite mound and waiting for his mum to return.
One female and three male cheetahs were spotted at Hardekool clearing, they all look to be about 2 years old. This is the first time these cheetah have been seen in the area.

PM
Two lionesses from the Sandy Patch pride were seen sleeping at Hardekool Dam with very full stomachs.
A male Serval was spotted on Doyer's road and another very special sighting that night was an aardvark, found on rhino cutline.

28 July
AM
Three lions from the Collar Pride and one from the Sandy Patch Pride were found at Jordaan's Dam They were found scent marking and laying down.
A male leopard (Ncila) was seen at Bush Lodge; he had moved off a duiker kill and was stalking a bushbuck.

PM
One male leopard (Mafufanyane) was seen on Vuyatela driveway scent marking and moving south. He stalked an impala without any luck.
Five lionesses, Styx Pride, were found on Euphorbia drive. They tried hunting an impala but were unsuccessful.
Three rhino, one female and two males, were seen moving east along Cheetah cutline.

29 July
AM
One male leopard was seen at Djuma Dam. He was found sleeping and then moved along donga to the north.
Two leopards, White Cloth and her cub, were found sleeping in the donga. They then started to move west along Euphorbia Drive.

PM
Four lionesses from the Styx Pride were found hunting zebra at Buffalo Dam, but were unsuccessful.
A breeding herd of elephant were found moving east along Euphorbia Drive.
One leopard (Ncila) was seen on Nkorho Drive hunting impala without any luck.

30 July
AM
Four lionesses from the Styx Pride were seen in Nkorho open area feeding on a zebra they had killed.
One female cheetah and her cub were found feeding on a Steenbok kill on Cheetah Plains.
Elephant bulls were sighted all over the reserve.
Three rhino were seen feeding on cheetah cutline.
A breeding herd of buffalo were seen sleeping on Cheetah Plains.

PM
Two bull Rhino's were found in Love Pan open area. They were moving north along the fire break.
Four lionesses from the Styx pride were found in Nkorho open area. They were feeding on the zebra carcass and being challenged by eight hyena. The lions stood their ground, but the hyenas persisted until we left them.
A breeding herd of buffalo were seen lying down in Kaalkol open area.

31 July
AM
Four lionesses from the Styx Pride were found east of Djuma Dam. They had been walking west and had finally lay down by the dam.
One male lion, Old Eastern male, was found in Nkorho clearing feeding on the zebra that the Styx pride had killed yesterday. Vultures and hyenas were present.
Three elephant bulls were seen feeding at Jacobin entrance.

PM
The four female lions from the Styx pride were found laying down east of Djuma dam. Their bellies were very full.
The Old Eastern male lion was still in Nkorho clearing lying down by the zebra kill. Vultures were still present.
Two elephant bulls were seen west of Kudu Corner Dam. They were feeding slowly towards the water.
A breeding herd of buffalo were seen moving slowly north just north of Kudu corner inside the Kruger National Park.
An African Wild Cat was seen just after dark walking west on the Manyeleti boundary west of Big Dam.

1 August
AM
One adult female rhino and two young bulls were seen feeding on the fire break on the eastern side of Cheetah cutline.
Four cheetah (1 adult female and three sub-adult females) were found stalking as impala on the north side of Nkorho camp open area. They were still stalking when we left.
A breeding herd of buffalo were found feeding slowly north just east of Cruise Camp.
Twelve hippo were seen playing in the water at Khaya Manzi.
One elephant bull was seen between Old entrance and New entrance feeding.
