In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

1 July
AM
2 male cheetahs were seen on MM Boundary moving west & scent marking, before moving south to Mala Mala.
The old Zambezi lion was lying down on Rhino Walk Up Road. He then got up & moved slowly north.
1 elephant bull was feeding on North Rock Clearing.
1 buffalo bull was seen at 2nd Rock.

PM
- One Rhino bull [short horn] was seen on the Southern part of Nyala dam feeding in a Southerly direction.
- One Elephant bull walking in a northerly direction along Rhino cutline..
- Female Leopard [White cloth] heading east from Djuma dam.
- Breading head of Elephants drinking water then headed off to the west from the dam.

2 July
AM
- One Rhino bull [short horn] was found moving in a Northerly direction from sandy patch.
- Few Elephant bulls feeding on the fire break on the Eastern site of Green thorn.

PM
- Three bull buffaloes feeding behind Djuma Bush Lodge.
- Male and the Female Leopards [Mafufunyana and Karula] were mating at triple M rd heading in a Southerly direction. They
finally went east towards Impala plain.
- One Elephant bull walking East along Vuyatela access rd from sandy patch.

3 July
AM
- Two Female lions [Sandy patch] were found laying at Cheetah pan after such a long walk that they had from the Western part of Jordaan's dam.
- One Rhino bull [short ear] was found at First rock feeding in a North Easterly direction, and he walked all the way to the Airstrip.
- Ten Buffalo bulls lying down on the Western site of Philemon's deep.

PM
- Two Female lions [Sandy patch] were hunting in a easterly direction from Cheetah pan ,and they went all the way to Milkberry.
- Four Elephant bulls feeding towards the East from Cheetah cutline.

4 July
AM
- Four Elephant bulls breaking branches and eating in the drainage line north of the staff village at Bush Lodge.
- Three bull Buffaloes laying out site Bush Lodge's entrance gate.

PM
- Breeding head of Elephants on the Eastern site of sandy patch clearing.

5 July
AM
- Two sub adult Leopard cubs, Beacon Female's cubs, were found at the old Airstrip on the Eastern part of Nyala dam.
- Some buffalo bulls feeding on the western site of Mluwanini drainage line.
- Few Elephant bull feeding on the southern end of Cheetah cutline.

PM
- Two sub adult Leopard cubs, Beacon Female's cubs, were found again at Khaya Manzi dam, the young male was hunting Monkeys on top of the big Jackal berry tree.
- Big breading Head of Elephants drinking water at Djuma dam.
- Seventeen to Twenty Hippos in the water at big dam.
