In
the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five"
or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular
animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant,
rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five"
(the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote
the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately
the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

June
PM
4 rhino bulls were drinking at Twin Dams.
A breeding herd of buffalo were also at the dam, sleeping.
2 elephant bull was found at Giraffe Dip. He was digging in the
river sand & drinking water from the hole.
White Cloth female (leopard) gave the staff a treat when she walked
through Bush Lodge & then out along Gowrie Main where the
drives caught up with her.
Mafufanyane (male leopard) was at Sandy Patch, walking west towards
the gate.
27 June
AM
2 leopards (beacon's cubs) were seen at Cobus' Dam where they
were hunting comb ducks & Egyptian geese.
4 elephant bulls were found on Cheetah Cutline. 2 of the bulls
were fighting each other.
The breeding herd of buffalo was still relaxing at Twin Dams.
The old Zambezi male lion was spotted sleeping on the clearing
in front of Bush Lodge.
PM
Ncila (young male leopard) was moving slowly north along Cheetah
Plain Pan with a full belly.
The old Zambezi lion was still sleeping. He was found just east
of Bush Lodge Clearing.
Five lionesses from the Styx Prude were found on Jacobin Clearing.
They were stalking & chasing buffalo & impala though in
the end they killed a wildebeest.
A breeding herd of elephant was at the Mluwanini.
28 June
AM
Ncila was found at Bush Lodge where he was rolling in buffalo
dung, before moving south into the drainage line.
The old Zambezi male had managed to steal the kill from the Styx
lionesses & was eating on Jacobin Clearing. The lionesses
were nowhere to be found though several hyena were waiting on
the clearing.
PM
A breeding herd of elephant were drinking at Gowrie Pan.
The old Zambezi male was still on the kill at Jacobin Clearing.
A very rare caracal was seen on Cheetah Plains.
29 June
AM
The
male rhino Short Horn was seen scent marking & urine washing
at Nyala Dam.
5 elephant bulls were feeding at Lion Pan.
The Zambezi male was still on the wildebeest kill with an increasing
number of hyena in the area.
A Serval was seen at Nyala Dam. He was quite skittish.
PM
Beacon female's 2 leopard cubs were again found at Cobus' Dam
where they were trying their luck at hunting impala & scrub
hare, but had no success.
The old Zambezi male was on Jacobin Clearing with the remains
of the kill. However the Collar Pride of 4 lions then appeared
& chased him off the kill, finishing the rest themselves.
There were also lots of hyenas at the kill sight.
30 June
AM
A female rhino & her calf were found at Rubbing Post Dam.
One rhino bull was seen at Djuma Dam.
2 rhino bulls were together on Zoë's Road.
PM
One rhino bull was on Sandy Patch.
A breeding herd of elephant were feeding on Gowrie Cutline.
Karula female leopard was out hunting francolin at Vuyatela.
2 buffalo bulls were relaxed on Vuyatela' Nest Road.
