In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

A breeding herd of Elephant was seen at Nyala Dam.
4 Rhino were found at Buffelshoek Dam.

19 April

1 Male Lion (Manyeleti Male) was found near Gowrie Gate. He was sleeping and looking well fed.
1 Elephant bull was seen near Sussen's Dam.

PM
1 Elephant bull was seen at Rhino Pan.
4 Rhinos were found at 1st Rock. they were drinking from water collected in the depressions on the rock and with the setting sun at their backs, it made for ample photographic opportunities.
1 Female Lion (Sandy Patch) was found close to the gate. She was looking interested in hunting and she was viewed stalking a herd of Impalas. She stalked to within range of the Impalas and managed to bring down a large Female. After the Impala was dead she started moving towards the gate to fetch her cubs which she had hid near the wardens house.

20 April
AM
1 Female Leopard (White Cloth) was found at Torchwood camp where she was looking interested in a herd of Impala. She stalked the herd for over an hour before finally killing a young male and immediately stashing the kill under the cover of a Guarri bush. Before feeding she moved away from the kill to go fetch her cubs.

PM
The White Cloth female and her 2 cubs were found feeding on the Impala caught in the morning. The mother had not yet hoisted the carcass. There were still loads of meat left for the next couple of days.
2 Male Lions were seen east of Bushbuck dam on the boundary.

21 April
AM
2 Buffalo Bulls were seen on the Galago clearing where they were feeding on long grass.
4 Rhinos were found on Hyena road moving slowly south.
A large herd of Buffalo were found on the Kaalkol Clearing lying down.
2 Male Cheetah were found on Cheetah Plains clearing.
The White Cloth Female Leopard was found at the kill sight near Torchwood with her 2 cubs.

PM
4 Rhinos were seen at Lucas' open area where they were crossing the Boundary to the South.
White Cloth was still feeding on her kill with her cubs and whilst watching them feed and play on a fallen over tree, a herd of Kudu approached the Leopards unaware of their presence. As soon as the Leopards were spotted the Kudus gave out loud alarm calls. Terrified of the loud barks the cubs shot to the ground and ran for cover. White cloth was unimpressed with her uninvited guests and stood her ground as they advanced snarling and hissing until they lost interest and moved on.
