In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

14 April
PM
1 Female Leopard (Beacon Female) was found at 1st rock with her 2 cubs where she was introducing them to red meat from what we know for the first time. They were feeding on the Vervet monkey she had killed in the morning and dragged to her lair at the base of 1st rock.

15 April
AM
The Newington Male Leopard was found west of Kudu Corner where he was stalking Impala and Zebra on a Clearing. As the day got warmer he showed less and less interest and eventually went and lay down in the donga near Jacobin Clearing.

PM
The Newington Male Leopard was relocated in the afternoon at 3 Pans where he moved slowly south towards the Boundary where he eventually crossed along the Mashpiri donga.
The Beacon Female Leopard's cubs were found near Sally's tree where they were playing in a Marula tree.

16 April
AM
The Beacon Female Leopard and her 2 cubs were found on the Galago entrance road where they had killed a Duiker and were feeding on it in a thicket. Occasionally one of the 3 Leopards would appear from the thicket and climb one of the nearby Marula trees.

PM
More time was spent with the Beacon female and her cubs. They were feeding contently before being rushed into a Marula tree by a "nosey" Hyena. Luckily, the female Leopard grabbed the kill and hoisted it into the tree tops and out of reach of the hyena and all three Leopards were able to feed in peace.

17 April
AM
1 Male Leopard (Ncila) was found at 3 Pans. He was scent marking the exact same route that his father, The Newington Male, had marked just 2 days before. This direct display of defiance by this Leopard, now over 3 years old, will tell whether he is able to hold his own against his father, who is a much larger cat.

PM
The Beacon female and her 2 cubs were found at Buffelshoek Dam where they were relaxing in a Marula tree together.

18 April
AM
4 Rhino were found at in the Sour Plum area.
The 2 Beacon female's cubs were found at Buffelshoek dam.
