In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

10 January
AM
Two male Cheetahs hunting and scent marking on top of the big fallen Marula tree at the corner between KNP, Djuma and Mala Mala, from there they went straight east to KNP.
Three big Elephant bulls feeding two were sometimes playing a fight.
One African wild cat killing a field mouse.

PM
Young female Leopard [kurhula] was hunting a Scrub hare, but she did not have any luck, she finally manage to find herself a hinge back tortoise.
Big breeding head of Elephants feeding across the Manyeleti boundary to the North.
Sandy patch females and Manyeleti male lions plus the two cubs were laying down in the southern part of Jordaan's dam; the male was always keeping guard of the cubs.
The seven Hippos were in Buffelshoek dam.
Zebras, lots of Kudus and Giraffes.

11 January

Big breeding herd of Elephants swimming at Jordaan's dam.
One female leopard hunting the fire break on the Northern part of Buffelshoek dam.
Herd of seven bull buffaloes laying in the middle of the road on the Northern part of Buffelshoek dam.
One very big warthog with very big tusks was drinking water at tree house dam.
Kudus and Monkeys.

PM
Sandy patch and Manyeleti male lions were laying on Frankel's dam wall, the male and the one female were mating. and they were both looking so exhausted.
Two bull Elephants feeding.
Two young bull Rhinos on the western Gowrie feeding.
Zebras, Hippos, Waterbucks, Baboons, Monkeys and the Giraffes.

12 January
AM
Two leopard cubs from the Beacon female were left by their mom on the western site of Rubbing post dam. The two young cubs were playing and the female one was also climbing big bushes and trees.
Three Rhinos: a Bull, Cow and the calf were feeding in the easterly direction from long pole.
Kudus, Zebras, Hippos and Giraffes and Wildebeests.

PM
Two leopard cubs were still laying at the same spot. One of the young cubs was playing with the frog and the other one killed a mouse.

13 January
AM
The morning was very quiet because it was raining.

PM
There was a lot of general game but no big five. It was still raining.

14 January
AM
The rain was still going on. The drives were still quiet.

15 January

Two Rhino bulls at Kudu corner just inside KNP.
Five Buffalo bulls at green pan.
Lots of Impalas, still raining.

16 January
AM
One male leopard - Mafufunyana - walking North from Philemon's Cutline.
Impalas, Kudus, Zebras and Monkeys.

PM
Two big bull Elephants crossing triple m to the east .
Six bull buffaloes laying in the water at Nyala dam.
Zebras, Kudus, Giraffes, Wildebeests.

17 January
AM
One Elephant bull feeding around the water hole.
Nine Buffalo bulls feeding on the eastern part of Galago.
Two Lions - male and sandy patch female - were laying on the eastern site of Frankel's dam.
One male Leopard [Newington] killed a female Waterbuck and her calf. The calf was very small, it looks like the female was giving birth when the Leopard found them.

Five white rhinos inside the KNP, north of Milkberry.
Breading head of Buffaloes feeding in the westerly direction from big Dam.
One big bull Elephant with a very big tusks.
Manyeleti male and Sandy patch female lions laying on the eastern part of Frankel's camp, the female finally went to drink at the dam.

18 January
AM
One sandy patch female lion plus here two cubs were laying in the drainage line south of Jordan's dam.
Five Rhinos were still feeding at the same spot as yesterday.
One Elephant bull feeding at Gowrie cutline.
Five bull Buffaloes feeding on the eastern site of Jordan's dam.
