In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.
 

20 November
PM
Two Leopards - Mafufunyana and Safari female - were seen on the western Gowrie. They were close to each other but they didn't seem to see each other.
Two Elephant bulls busy feeding. There were also some zebras, Hyenas, civet and the genet was close to the Lodge.

21 November
AM
Two Buffalo bulls laying down close to Gowrie main on the east site of Mlowati crossing.
Two Elephant bulls feeding close by.
One female lion [sandy patch] with her two cubs laying on the western site of Jordan's Dam.
There was also a lot of Giraffes, Zebras, Kudus, as well as Hippo outside the water and fifteen to twenty Waterbucks laying down.

Three Rhinos feeding also on the western site of Jordaan's Dam.
There was also a one and half meter African Rock Python, and some Zebras, Kudus and a Civet.

23 November
AM
A large Herd of Buffalo was located on Cheetah Plains, laying down in the clearing.
A male Lion (Manyeleti) was found near Jordaan's dam. He moved west into the woodland until he lay down to rest for the day.
A female Leopard (Beacon female) was found South of Sussen's Dam. She was on the move and did not hang around for too long. Eventually she crossed a donga, which was too steep for the vehicles to cross.
A Caracal was seen close to Cheetah Plains.

PM
A single Hyena was found on the Hippo carcass at Buffelshoek Dam, feeding on what little remains.
2 Male Lions (2 new males that have very little to no mane, thought to be rogue males from the Kruger, as one of them has a radio collar fitted and is part of a research program) were found close to Gowrie Gate.
4 Lions (Western Pride) were found on Weavers Nest Road moving north towards Vuyatela Camp.

24 November
AM
A large herd of Buffalo was found on Lion Pan Open Area laying down. When they began to move they went east into Kruger.
4 Buffalo Bulls were found at Cheetah Pan.

PM
The drive started with an array of general game on all the burnt areas.
Elephant bulls were found throughout the reserve.
A Rhino Bull was found north of Big Dam.

25 November
AM
3 Lions (Sandy Patch Pride) were found at Gowrie Gate. They were scent marking profusely, and it looked as they were making a defiant stand against all the rogue Lions which have been seen in the heart of this pride's territory in recent days.
2 Male Lions (The maneless males from KNP) were found at Cheetah Pan sleeping.
3 Elephant bull were seen at Big Dam.
