In the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five" or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five" (the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

31 October
PM
Breeding herd of Buffalo walking towards Annette's dam for water. Breeding herd of elephants following them, but stopped to feed. Matriarch dropped droppings and the rest of the herd started eating the feces for the bacteria. Old male lion from the east still at the buffalo calf carcass.
Mother rhino and calf at MM boundary west of cheetah plains crossing north. Picked up a male leopard, Newington, walking to cheetah plain pan for a drink. After drinking he went hunting. Finally killed a young duiker and started feeding. Saw a Boomslang in a tree on the drive home.

1 November
AM
Breeding herd of buffalo drinking at 3 in a row pan. Headed south. Male lion at cheetah plain pan after finishing the buffalo calf. Giraffe coming to drink, deterred by lion. Big herd of zebra grazing at cheetah plains. Hyena den was active. 5 adults, 7 pups.

PM
Elephants at 3 in a row pan, breeding herd - wallowing. Buffalo arrived, breeding herd. Kudu, Zebra, Impala also arrived at 3 in a row. We left and headed south to the boundary. 4 Rhinos in the distance, grazing. Skuthane pride located up north, feasting on a waterbuck.

2 November
AM
Male lion at cheetah plain pan again. 2 Rhino bulls also. Breeding herd of buffalo at green thorn, heading to the north to the water holes. We headed to the northern section and followed up on two leopards and finally got them; Jordaan's and Beacon female were seen mating and vocalizing.

PM
3 Breeding herds of elephant at 3 in a row pan, down south, and close to bush lodge. Giraffe at cheetah plain pan, zebra, impala, monkeys. Male lion lying close to Kaalkol clearing. 2 rhino at the MM boundary west of cheetah plain. Back at 3 in a row pan, we saw buffalo, leopard, and rhino all at the same spot.

3 November
AM
1 male lion north of Nkorho laying down. 2 female lions (Skuthane) at airstrip. Mother and 2 offspring leopards at Buffelshoek dam. Mother had killed a duiker at the sun down spot. Dragged it the drainage line and hung it in the tree. Hippo at Buffelshoek dam. Giraffe, zebra, and another leopard at MMM inside Big Gowrie.

4 November
AM
One male Lion laying at cheetah plain clearing. Five Rhinos feeding at kudu comer and they finally headed into KNP. Mother leopard and two cubs were still feasting off the Duiker at Buffelshoek dam and they finally went west away from their prey. Sandy patch lionesses and Manyeleti male, one of the females has got cubs. We followed the one female carrying one of the cubs in her mouth to the western part of Jordaan's dam. We had only seen two cubs and suspected more from where she came because the male was left at that spot and he didn't move; he was always checking in the drainage line where the mother came out with the cub. The cubs must be less than a week because the last time we seen that pride and the female was still pregnant: that was on the 30th of October.

PM
Two of the Skuthane pride members were hunting the breeding head of Buffaloes at Umbrella Thorn Clearing in Buffelshoek. Breeding of herd Elephants on the eastern part of Bush Lodge. Mother leopard and two cubs were still eating the duiker at Buffelshoek dam. Three rhinos at Cheetah plain. Boomslang up in the tree.

5 November
AM
Breeding herd of buffalo at 3 in a row pan. Breeding herd of buffalo, elephant, and some zebra at bush lodge. Wildebeest at 3 in a row pan. Elephant, 2 bulls at umbrella clearing. 2 lion cubs without mom, at the same spot where she was before. 3 rhino, inside the Manyeleti boundary, south of Tortoise dam. 1 leopard tortoise and a Boomslang again at the same tree.
