In
the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five"
or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular
animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant,
rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five"
(the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote
the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the
term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

failed hunt she moved to rest in the shade of a Guarri bush.
A breeding herd of Buffalo was found near Green pan, laying down.

they had made good progress on the meat but still have enough to
last them another day.
2 Lionesses (Sandy Patch) were found on Nyala road laying down.
They were looking very well fed.
2 young male Cheetahs were found at 1st rock. They were slightly
nervous of the vehicles to start with but after some time with the

Rhino's were found at Marula Pan.

1 Large male Lion (Old Eastern Male) was still laying down in front
of Bush Lodge. He sat up every now and then looking for any activity
around the Bush Lodge waterhole. At one stage a large Male Elephant
walked within a few meters of the Lion but seemed to ignore him
as he fed.
1 Female Leopard (White Cloth) was found to the East of Bush Lodge.
We followed her for some time as she stalked a number of different
prey items. She didn't have any luck and continued on her way.
1 female Leopard (Beacon female) and her two cubs were found north
of Vuyatela feeding on a Steenbok carcass. Whilst the mother fed
the 2 cubs were full of their usual antics. One took interest in
a small group of Buffalo, which passed within a few feet of the
kill. The young female cub took to harassing a Lesser Bushbaby who
was isolated in a small tree on the clearing. Eventually she lost
interest and joined her mother at the carcass to feed.
