In
the Ranger's Diary we tend to concentrate on the "Big Five"
or rather the "Big Seven" since these are the most popular
animals. The "Big Seven" includes lion, leopard, elephant,
rhino, buffalo, cheetah and wild dog. The term "Big Five"
(the first five animals listed) was historically used to denote
the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. Fortunately the
term is now used to describe the most popular animals.

2 May
AM
We watched two male lions for a while this morning, they were very
relaxed. We also saw wildebeest, zebra, buffalo and Impala. A pack
of wild dogs were in the area running in all directions! They managed
to make a kill around Bush Lodge. We saw a group of six ground hornbills
foraging through the grass. A family of dwarf mongoose were sunning
themselves on an anthill and the warthogs were eating the new grass
shoots in the firebreak. We saw some waterbuck crossing the road
and a steenbok. A very exciting drive!
PM
Impala were out in force this afternoon as well as giraffe. We watched
two male lions lying in the road and rolling on to their backs -
relaxing in the afternoon sunlight. We saw a family of waterbuck
near the dam as well as a pod of hippos. The two lionesses were
spotted with their cubs as well as elephant and buffalo. We watched
a stunning sunset as we had our drinks and saw a leopard on the
way home.
3 May
AM
This morning we saw a leopard up a tree with his breakfast it was
mind boggling to imagine what strength he has to get that impala
up the tree! We also saw giraffe, waterbuck, Impala and wildebeest.
We saw a very elegant male kudu with his family and a group of elephants
feeding on the grass. An immature Gymnogene called out in the morning
mist, much to the other birds distress (as he eats their chicks)
but they chased him away. We also caught sight of the ground hornbills
foraging through the grass.
PM
Tonight we saw a leopard stalking through the bushes as well as
a few male Buffalo. We also had the privilege of seeing two female
lions with their cubs bounding after them through the bushes. They
hid them safely in the thickets before venturing out again. We spotted
a group of young bush babies staring down at us from the top of
a tree as well as an Elephant munching near by.
4 May
AM
This morning was wonderfully misty. The sunlight streamed magically
through the trees as we looked for animals. We saw a group of Wildebeest
and Zebra as well as impala. A cheetah was spotted having a drink
and we were able to watch him for quite a while. We also saw elephant
this morning as well as a lot of giraffe, one of which was lying
down. we also saw a African Hawk eagle sitting in his nest and a
Nyala. A huge kudu bull came to drink at the watering hole but he
was a bit nervous and did not stay long.
PM
Tonight we saw buffalo in the drainage line as well as a Genet.
There were many impalas, kudus and wildebeest around and about too.
We saw a breeding herd of elephants deep in the bushes and moving
very fast. A female giraffe and her baby moved cautiously through
the bush towards a watering hole, which was unfortunately empty
so they moved on to find another one.
5 May
AM
This morning we watched the family of cheetah on the open area in
front of Nkorho, they were very relaxed and took very little notice
of the vehicles watching them. We found a kudu bull, Wildebeest,
zebra, impala and a steenbok. We spotted a family of warthog digging
for roots and sat watching young squirrels stretching and sunning
themselves in the morning sun.
PM
Tonight we followed two leopards moving along the road, the female
was following the male wherever he went, much to the amusement of
the guests! There was a family of cheetah on an open area near the
lodge, they moved slowly down to the water in the afternoon light
and had a leisurely drink. We also spotted elephants feeding. A
genet ran along the road in front of the vehicle, which allowed
us to get a great look at him.
6 May
AM
This morning we saw a rhino moving towards the Kruger as well as
a herd of elephants with their babies. We also saw a herd of buffalo
most of which were very relaxed and happy to get close to the vehicle.
We saw Zebra, Impala and wildebeest and a large giraffe that stood
and stared at us for a while. We saw a lot of kudu's, and an especially
impressive male with huge twisted horns.
