Elephant tracking
elephant_close.jpg (71374 bytes)Sunday 21 March

Having seen a great male elephant this morning with a pair of serious 6 foot tusks, our ranger, Lee suggested we return around midmorning to track it on foot. The only precaution "if it charges – don’t run". We came across the elephant fairly easily and as we approached him he turned in our direction, flapped his ears in a convincing fashion and then stood totally still facing us with his ears widely spread picking up the sounds of our movement – now within about 30m (90feet) of him. And then he came towards us in what looked like a very determined way. Lee immediately started toward the elephant also in an aggressive manner which suddenly changed it’s mind and turned around, running short distances at a time. Sweat dripping of us in torrents we walked back to the lodge – outwardly calm but pulse racing as well.
