On Monday two male giraffe were seen fighting on the clearing in front of Galago Camp by the resident ranger, Ephram. Graham Cooke went to investigate.

Leopard Kill!

December 1999

leopardkill1_t.jpg (8452 bytes)

A remarkable photo-essay of a leopard killing a warthog. The Magnis party had an amazing glimpse of an African Savanna drama, which unfolded a mere 10 meters from their open safari vehicle.

A toga party at Bush Lodge!

October 1999

We aim to please at Djuma and so it was the Landau party. Basil Landau celebrated his seventieth birthday at Djuma Game Reserve. They reserved the whole of Bush Lodge and had themselves a whale of a time, or is it "an elephant of a time"?

September 1999

creche_t.jpg (6542 bytes)

Djuma Game Reserve, in partnership with the community of Utha, have created Nwa_Tumberi Creche. The value of this pre-school experience can be measured in many different ways, but perhaps the most poignant is the sense of joy and wonder on their faces when they first play with the donated toys.

Djuma Game Reserve prides itself on its high proportion of returning guests such as Richard and Rosemary McNeill, who sent us some great photographs from their previous visit.

May 1999

tapnack.jpg

The Tapnack family visited Djuma Game Reserve the last weekend of May. They stayed in Galago Camp, an intimate lodge accommodating 10 people maximum. Frank and Cheryl sent me a lovely e-mail which I reproduce here with kind permission

A lucky lioness!

April 1999

lioness_snare1_thm.jpg (6569 bytes)

We found a lioness with a snare around her neck, she had moved southwards from a reserve to the north of us. She was very lucky in that whilst the snare was tight, it had not cut her yet and we were able to remove the snare.

Vuyatela, a traditional ground-breaking ceremony.

April 1999

Vuyatela is Djuma Game Reserve’s newest camp. Vuyatela means "come and visit again", a term that typifies African hospitality. A Sangoma (traditional spiritualist) came to bless the site in a ground breaking ceremony

When the light went out

March 1999

lion_light_thum.jpg (6330 bytes)

We are often asked about our experiences in the bush. We are especially asked about encounters with dangerous animals. This aspect of our lives fascinates people and I have decided to write some of these stories.

The Africam story

March 1999

africam_thum.jpg (6330 bytes)

Earlier this year Graham and Paul, who had recently created the company Africam, approached us. Their idea was brilliant! We listened and having had some experience with the Internet decided that this could work!

Tracking an elephant

February 1999

elephant_close_thm.jpg (6330 bytes)

Having seen a great male elephant this morning with a pair of large tusks, our ranger, Lee suggested we return around midmorning to track it on foot.
