Djuma - Vuyatela Private Game Lodge

We eventually left the park about 2:00 PM, and raced to our first game lodge, Vuyatela in the Djuma Private Game Reserve. I managed to get a speeding ticket but was able to negotiate that without any jail time! We arrived at the lodge just as the drive was about to depart. We "dropped" everything and jumped into one of the vehicles. Although Djuma boarders the Kruger Park, but you are not allowed to drive from the park into the Private Game Reserves. What should be a 30-minute drive becomes 3 hours, as you have to drive out and make a wide circle on some miserable roads to get back in.

I had been twice before to Djuma and really like it there. The first time we stayed at Bush Lodge and then at their newer more upscale camp called Vayutela. Vayutela is a wonderful camp with the main building set in front of a water hole that is a constant source of animal activity ranging from the various antelope such as Nyala, Kudu, Impala, to Wildebeest, Giraffe and Elephant. They even have visiting hippos. All of the rooms are set out on individual decks overlooking a dry riverbed where you can also sit and watch game. One afternoon as I was reading on our deck, I was surrounded by a rather large heard of Nyala as well as a whole troop of vervet monkeys. The monkeys are great fun but you have to be careful they don't get into your room. This happened to one of our guests and they made a real mess of their room it as well as eating their chocolates and stealing their toothpaste!

As in all the private game lodges you take two drives a day in open safari vehicles that have three elevated rows of seats plus the driver. There are no doors or roofs, giving you great visibility for game viewing and photos. These vehicles also allow the game perfect access to "you", but for some reason they do not jump in and eat humans as often as you might think.

During our two days at Vuyatela we had some great game sightings and saw all the big five as well as cheetah. We had some very up close and personal elephant experiences as well as the opportunity to follow a leopard for about 15-20 minutes in a dry riverbed while she was hunting. Unfortunately she did not catch anything while we were with her. These cats are so beautiful to watch. It is a rare opportunity when you are able to follow one for so long a time as we were afforded.
The lions we saw spent the whole time sleeping or getting up, walking a few meters and then going back to sleep. I love watching lions when they are hunting but otherwise it is like watching grass grow! They just sleep all day. The cheetah is probably my favorite cat but our one sighting was brief, only a few minutes. We also saw some buffalo, not the most exciting animal but a lone bull can get the juices flowing when he stares you down. Strangely enough going through a heard of hundreds is not as threatening as one lone bull. Rangers considerer them the most dangerous of the big five as they are the most unpredictable. Having said this, the real dispute in South Africa is over which animal actually kills more people. Statistics give credit to the hippo. But the smart money is on the crocks.
At about six we stopped for our evening sundowner which is a great opportunity to get out of the vehicle and relax and "mark your territory". The ladies are usually less comfortable with this at first, but quickly get used to the bush toilet. There is nothing quite as civilized as having a glass of wine or a gin & tonic in the bush watching the sunset and wondering what might be out there looking to eat you. During the morning drives, the same break is called a sunriser. You can have a gin & tonic, but most prefer to start the day with coffee or tea.

Over the next few days we had some of the most incredible gave drives I have known. We sat in the middle of some large breading herds of elephants that were so close you could almost touch them. We experienced large herds of elephants on almost every drive. We even came across a heard participating in a group mud bath. Large bull elephants were acting like silly kids, rolling around in the mud. One after the other and sometimes two or three together. That was quite a site.

One morning we found a leopard, and stayed with her for 30 minutes. Leopards are not that easy to find, especially in mid morning. You usually find them at dusk when the light is bad. Then they typically run into the bush where you cannot follow them.

That same we found two more leopards. It was dark, and as if on cue, they went off into the bush after a few minutes. But, just as we decided to head back for dinner we came across a "third" leopard. She darted into the bush in within seconds, we heard the kill take place. Quickly we darted into the same bush, turned on the lights and saw the leopard with a still struggling steenbok in her mouth. I think that is as close as you can get to see a leopard kill. And, certainly the only one I had seen after dozens of game drives.

The leopard, totally unaffected by our presence or lights shining on her face proceeded effectively kill her prey and eat it. Fifteen minutes later we heard a noise that spooked the leopard and activated her to drag her kill up the nearest tree, onto a branch just over our heads. We actually had to back up, as we were afraid of something dropping on us! Soon we saw the reason for the leopard's flight.

Two hungry hyenas came into view. It wasn't clear if they actually had any idea there was a leopard above but they smelled something and hung around. When leg the leopard had been chewing fell to the ground, the two hyenas rushed for it. The larger hyena grabbed the leg and a small confrontation took place. The leopard continued to eat in the safety of her branch. Eventually we had to leave the drama to get back to the lodge for our own dinner. This was certainly one of the more memorable game drives I have taken.

The next morning we were out again and after the usual herds of elephant, a few giraffes, kudu, impala, etc. we came across a single male rhino. We had actually seen a mother and baby the evening before but did not stay with them as they were a bit nervous and ran off. But this bull seemed totally relaxed with us and we spent half an hour with him, sometimes no further than 3 meters from the vehicle. We then found a leopard cub that the mother had left while she went hunting and a few more male buffalo. We were now averaging 3-4 of the big five per drive, not per stay! Having by now visited many game parks in southern Africa, there is no question that Sabi Sands has the greatest concentration of game that I have seen other than perhaps the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

Hi Liane and all the team,
David & Brian here from a cold North Devon. We would like to thank you all so very, very much for the fantastic four days we spent at the Bush Lodge. Because of you, the whole safari experience completely exceeded our expectations.
Our stay at the lodge was undoubtedly the highlight of our whole South African holiday - and not just because we saw every animal that we ever dreamed of seeing. The lodge itself, the organisation, the staff, the service, the food, the atmosphere, the accommodation were all of a very high standard. Just when we thought we couldn’t possibly expect more – you produced it!

Piet and Abel were excellent and really knew what they were doing on the drives. You all pulled out the stops for David’s birthday and gave both of us a day we will never forget. First, we found the white rhino and then the lion and lioness together. Being locked into close eye contact with a lion at that distance was an incredibly emotional experience and took us both by surprise. We were ready for the bucks fizz before coffee that morning! David loved the birthday candle on his scrambled egg and the singing to accompany it! And as for the cake - thanks Eunice, Kim and Sue for your efforts there. On the evening drive there was the thrill of getting trumpeted at by the huge bull elephant who thought we were going to steal his amarulas! David has it all on film - including my whimpering! And please thank the cheetahs for climbing up onto the termite mound to pose for us - so thoughtful of them

We both hope that we'll be back again one day. We certainly wouldn't consider going anywhere else after the way you looked after us.

Thank you for making everything so special.

I just wanted to say hello and to let you know that we think about you all and read "Ranger's Diary" with a huge amount of interest and envy. :o) We had such a great time with you and will do everything in our power to come back again soon.
Please give our best to everyone.

Dear Liane,
This is a somewhat belated thank you for the wonderful holiday we had at Djuma in October. It really was quite fantastic and we have such happy memories of our stay. All of you were so good with the children too - from Edward's elephant hat, through Henry's hunt for the elusive cerval, to Oliver's excursion to the airstrip! I am attaching a few photos. Please pass on our thanks to everyone, particularly Kim and Chris, and Piet and Andrew for the awesome game drives and Abel for the fascinating trip to Utah and Dixie. We all hope that one day we will be able to return to Djuma but meanwhile wish you all a very happy New Year.
With best wishes, Lysbeth Sleath

Dear Pippa,
You may recall our brief meeting over lunch, during my recent stay at Vuyatela.
Time has flown since our return home, particularly with the activities relating to the Xmas celebrations.
I've finally managed to spend sometime, exploring your excellent website, including Africam and reading the Rangers diaries. It has brought back, very fond memories of our stay.... and the wonderful way in which we were looked after by the team. Mark's hospitality, Jimmy's friendly, helpful assistance at the Bar and Helen's excellent guiding, came flooding back and I thought I'd take the opportunity to thank you all for a super time. Ruth and I shall always remember this part of the trip with very fond memories.
Ruth has collated some photos from our collection and hopes to send them in the New year. Hopefully you will receive them, before long.
In the meantime, please convey my kindest regards and best wishes for 2005 to all, including Jade, if she is still there. We did enjoy the trips with Helen and Jade.

Dear Pippa
Just back since a few days in Switzerland from our holiday in SA, I want to tell you that we had a absolutely great time in Sabi Sand with our friends from Germany, Stellenbosch, Somerset West. The Camp was really great. We enjoyed staying there and we had great safaris with Dickson and Owen. I promised Dickson to send him some picture from the Safari and now, so they are enclosed.
I am sure that we will be soon back, perhaps already next year if it is possible for all of us to take holiday. It was and it would be so nice to stay with friends and family at such a beautiful lodge like Galago Camp was and is. Thanks again for every thing and hopefully see you soon again.
Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all of you

Liane,
Please forward to Chris, Morris, and Kim- unfortunately, we did not get to meet you as you were on holiday during our stay at Djuma.
Now that we have returned to the jungle of New York, we spend lot's of time thinking about the wonderful jungle of South Africa. Thanks for an amazing couple of days in Djuma Bush Lodge. As promised, we are attaching photos of the cheetah. Chris- you were right- the cheetah looking at us came out great! In fact, it won honorable mention in the African Safari photo competition and you will be able to view it on their website at the end of November.
As for the rest of our trip, Chobe was great for large game viewing but
not as exciting as our Djuma experience. Staying on road and having to be in by 7 just didn't cut it...
Then there was Hwange. Another wonderful experience...up there with
Djuma!
We also had an amazing white water rafting trip down the Zambeze River- something you should try to do if you haven't already been there.
Again, we just wanted to thank you again for an amazing time and let you know we can't stop talking about you and all the wonderful sights we saw on our first trip to southern Africa.
Cheers!

  Dear Mark,
We've been home now for over a week but still have the glow from our stay at Vuyatela. Everything about our stay - our kaya, the food, the wonderful staff, the village visit, the expertise of Charles and Owen, the animals we saw - was just perfect, and topping it off with the magical experience of dinner in the bush on our last evening was the icing on the cake.
The village visit with Rodney was not just informative but inspirational - it was a delight and a privilege to meet teachers and children at the schools we visited. We took some photos and would be grateful if you could pass on to Rodney the three we have attached to this email.
Thank you to everybody for a memorable holiday. Vuyatela is a wonderful place to learn about Africa - we hope to come back one day.

Just would like to thank you so much for the most unbelievable experience you embraced both myself, and Johann with - It truly was a time I will treasure dearly...from the bougainvillea blossoms all over the bedroom, the champagne, the views, the decadent chocolate cake, your warm hospitality, to the birds and wildlife....and there is so much more!

  Hi Chris & Kim
Sorry it's taken a while to email, hope you (and all at Bush Lodge) are well.
Many thanks for the fantastic time we had at Djuma at the end of September - we really couldn't have enjoyed it more, and your guiding, Chris, is straight out of the top drawer.
We had a great time for the rest of our holiday too - Oliphants and Berg en Dal, Swaziland, Mkuze Falls and Kwazulu Natal - though Djuma was a hard act to follow.
Waterbirds and sunbirds were also pretty good at Mkuze Falls (and paradise flycatchers near the tents) - and we found our cheetah there (almost but not quite a match for BrokenTail the leopard). Also a couple of old male elephants intently digging up and chomping the roots of a tree.
I've attached a few of the photos of BrokenTail and the bachelor giraffes and we got some pretty decent ones of the Dugger Boys too, I'm glad to say. Click here to view these photos.
Hope everything's going well at Djuma - pass our regards to Morris, Graham and the rest of the crew - and if you find your way over to London anytime do let us know.
best wishes

Dearest Char and the Dynamic Bush Lodge Team,
My apologies for the 'lateness' of my e-mail, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for your hospitality. As I sit at my desk, I can't believe it was just a few short weeks ago that I was soaking up the Mpumalanga sunshine with a few showers in between (hehe!).
You run such a warm and intimate camp - the vibe was just fantastic and your staff are all so well trained and friendly! I really enjoyed my stay and can certainly see why my clients want to return over and over.
Well done to you all and thanks too for taking such good care of our clients - we couldn't do it without you!

  Dear Mark and Staff,
My wife and I would like to thank you and the staff for providing an excellent and memorable experience at Vuyatela. Were we able to go back and change our itinerary of Southern Africa, we would have allocated more days at Vuyatela and fewer days at our other destinations in Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Vuyatela provided excellent accommodations, and wonderful game drives. I must admit we did not know what to expect from a private game reserve, but other than the overcrowding of vehicles we experienced in East Africa, the abundance of wildlife and natural environment at Vuyatela was unsurpassed. We appreciated your guides Nick, and especially Graham who went out of their way to find, and to explain the habits and details of the many species of wildlife and plant life in the area.
In regards to your web site djuma.com, I am embarrassed to say I was not aware of it until sitting in the back seat of a game drive and seeing djuma.com embroidered on the back of Helen's hat. I was not even aware Helen was providing live web cam pictures during our drive until I inquired as to the purpose of the gear. After arriving back home I explored your web site and was totally impressed with the great documentation and pictures available to review. To those who fear this high tech coverage of Djuma would spoil the natural aspect, take comfort in the knowledge that the Djuma web team has kept all of this so low profile it can hardly be noticed.
In closing I would like to say keep doing what you are doing, if we are able to re-visit South Africa, we will come back to Vuyatela.
Thanks again to you and the staff.
Sincerely,
Jim & Evelyn Gray

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone for making our recent stay so superb. Special thanks to Nick, Rodney and Henry for making the drives so exciting and memorable (and for finding me a warthog!) and to Jimmy for bringing us drinks all the way up to the top of the observation tower when we couldn't tear ourselves away from elephant watching!
The food was wonderful - though having seen our photos showing two little tubby people we know we ate far too much and are back on the lettuce leaves to compensate! The village trip was very special too. We'll not forget singing along with "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands" for a long time!
You really have something very special at Vuyatela and we're so pleased that Roger at Rainbow Tours sent us to you.

  Dear Liane,
It's now Saturday morning and we are back home in England but we are thinking of you all at Bush Lodge and wishing we were still there and out on our morning game drive with Graham!
We all had the most wonderful four days at Djuma; we loved everything about it and have so many fantastic memories of our all too short stay in the bush. To have seen the big five and so much more was incredibly exciting for us and we are hooked on the safari experience and can't wait to get back to Africa.
The welcome, friendliness of all the staff (Kim, Chris, Life, Piet, Abel and you) and the informality of the Lodge made us feel as if we were staying with friends and we were all very sad to leave. You were all superb and we can't thank you enough for making our visit so special. We are so glad we saved the safari to the end of our holiday - it wouldn't have been the same going on to somewhere else!
Our game drives with Graham and Patrick were unforgettable; the visit to Utah with Abel a humbling experience; the bush walk with Chris so informative; and the hospitality at the Lodge fantastic. We couldn't have asked for more.
With thanks to you all,
Pippa, Toby, Jessica and Christy xxxx

Dear Pendrae, Mark, Chris, Difference & to everyone at Djuma!!
I do hope you're all keeping well and life in the bush is still as fabulous as ever.
Firstly I must give you my sincerest apologies for not getting in contact with you sooner…. It's only taken me a whole year!!! And I can tell you I'm thoroughly embarrassed it's taken so long…. it's just too easy to get swept away with life in London.
I was actually prompted to write to you after Matt & I celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary recently, and I realised I still hadn't written (or sent photos)!!!
I know it's late, but I just wanted to say an enormous thank you to you all for helping to make our wedding & honeymoon so special. We truly had the most amazing time at Djuma… so much so that we're still gushing over it a year later! Thank you so so so much!
And it turned out that eloping was definitely the right thing to do… all the parents were absolutely thrilled for us… it was our friends that gave us a rollicking! And of course we insisted on having a lavish party to make up for everyone missing the marriage ceremony!! So all was forgiven.
And you'll be pleased to know married life is wonderful… but then we did get off to a magnificent start (with your help!). We're absolutely going to celebrate a few anniversaries with you guys in the future…we've already started saving!
Anyway, I thought you might finally like some of the wedding shots for your album. I've also attached some of my favourite animal shots I took.
Hope you enjoy. CLICK HERE to see their photos.
Both Matt & I hope to see you again very soon.
Until then, take care & thanks again.
Best wishes,

Do you have Nick's (email) address, so we can send him some of the pictures he made and thank him personally? Also thanks to Rodney for his trackers skills and the good teamwork he had with Nick
We hope to come back to Djuma/ Vuyatela soon.

Dear Charmian & Mark, Jurie & Pippa, Marietjie, Lee-Ann, Kim and all at Djuma/Vuyatela and a special thanks to Nick & Aubrey (Vuyatela) and Piet & Mories (Bush),
What a wonderful, special time we had with you - thank you all very, very much. It was quite a shock to have to return to work on Monday, and typically, a backload. Thanks to you we were privileged enough to be able to spend 2 nights in the bush away from the office.
We returned with special memories of game-viewing in the rain, visiting the township, following two lions in the landrover, learning to track elephant on our bush walk, breakfast in the bush and eating and eating and eating!!! The food was delicious - could you part with the recipes for the Panna Cotta desert with orange toffee and the dip (served with chips on our first night at Vuyatela while drying our wet backsides after the game drive). This would be for Cecily and Petru.
The two lodges have a very different feel about them so after our visit we definitely feel more comfortable recommending the lodge best suited for the client. Of course we loved both!! The staff and rangers were extremely friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
The only problem we have with our visit is that we enjoyed it so much that we wish we could visit again soon. Thank you also for the fleeces and shirts - you really went out of your way to spoil us!!!
With best wishes,

  Hi Helen,
Our stay at the Bush lodge was outstanding. Lee- Ann, Kim, Piet, Morris, Patrick, Bongi…. the list goes on and on, are just great people to be with. I must confess that my trip there has changed my perception of Djuma. It has elevated it to a much higher level in terms of experience. My trip to the village was the highlight of our stay. I was hugging and kissing kids, it was just what we needed to complete our experience. On top of that I got pink eyes from one of the kids. So, I now have puffy eyes, but feeling much better. We will sell Djuma, I spoke Wilderness, our DMC about it.
Again, thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to experience this great product.

  Dear Chairman
Thank you for a wonderful experience!
All the people were very friendly and helpful. Mark has a lovely way of creating a relaxed atmosphere in combination with superb hospitality.
Our game drives with Chris were wonderful. His knowledge of the fauna and flora are commendable.
The "kayas" are lovely, especially the attention to detail, and certainly very unique.
The food is excellent and beautifully presented.
Both camps have a unique atmosphere and something special to offer to visitors.

Dear Charmian and all at Vuyatela
It took me this long to write a thank you note, because I did not know where to start!
All I can say is THANK YOU that my family and I could stay at Vuyatela lodge recently. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our stay at your lovely lodge and felt special and spoilt all the time. Like Jimmy said to us on arrival: Vuyatela is full of surprises, and it truly was!
Will you please just thank every member of the team again for their friendliness and the part they played in making our stay an unforgettable one - from Lucy who took such great care of our (screaming!) kids, the people who prepared the tasty meals, Solly who tracked the lions for us to everyone in camp who helped to make us feel at home. It was so hard to leave, because we felt we were leaving new friends behind. Thank you, Charmian, for organizing the flights with Nelair - that was a special, unexpected treat not to have to drive all the way up again.
We think what you have is so special and couldn't stop raving. Kate thought it was quite funny, but she was not surprised that we love it so much!

  Hi Jurie and Pippa
Just thought I should let you know - my brother and a group of friends all from the Cape stayed at Galago on the nights of the 2nd. 3rd. July. They have all come back RAVING about the place. They could not say enough good things - the accommodation, the staff all great. Dickson they thought was great as they felt he made a real effort with everyone, kids included. The one couple have been to many different lodges and they reckon the experience at Galago was difficult to beat!! So there we go - well done on a job well done.
Cheers for now

  Dear Pendrae,
On behalf of me, Victor and The Thursday Club, please pass on my thanks to all of the lovely staff at Vuyatela. We had such a wonderful experience at your fabulous lodge! The experience was only enhanced by your friendly, professional staff. In fact, Vuyatela offers the best service that I have every experienced in my five years living in South Africa.
I cannot think of one complaint…my only regret is not having the foresight to extend our stay J
A special thank you to you for organising Victor's birthday cake this weekend. I can safely say that this was his most memorable birthday ever!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for a wonderful weekend!!! And once again thank you for supporting the Thursday Club.

  Hi there Charmian,
We've just returned from a great time in the bush. The lodge (Vuyatela) is certainly very unique and special, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
May I take this opportunity to compliment our game ranger - Chris. Of all the game drives I've been on in my life, the two at Vuyatela were definitely among the best! His knowledge of and passion for the bush is commendable.

  Liane,
By the way, I simply can not compliment your staff at the Bush Lodge enough. They were FANTASTIC!! I had a terrific time during my stay and plan on coming back again. I've gotten a lot of compliments on the pictures I took at Djuma. People simply can't get over how great/postcard-like my pictures are. I've gotten very busy just sending out copies and creating screen savers and wallpaper for folks. Since I truly have no skills with a camera, I'll have to give all of the credit to Nic (Ranger) and Abel (Tracker). They were INCREDIBLE!!!

Just a quick note to thank you for the wonderful hospitality and all your help during our recent stay with you. Oliver, George and Hal have quickly developed a love of Africa and have already started a concerted campaign to get back. On the air taxi back to Nelspruit we turned around to see Oliver in tears on the back seat. We asked what the problem was - thinking that as the ride was a little bumpy he might be feeling sick - but he was just very upset about leaving the camp and the bush. This is always a sign of a great trip - and although he soon got over being so upset - he managed to extract a few rather rash promises from his father in the meantime....
We had a good time in Cape Town the following week - but it seems very strange to be back in London now.
I hope that you are managing over the Easter rush and do hope to see you all again.
With very best regards

Gordon and I want you to know how much we appreciated your incomparable hospitality last week. We believe Djuma Bush Lodge has something very special, which is reflected in the wonderful ability of all staff to make one feel completely at home and thoroughly spoilt! Everything about our two days was outstanding - the service, the food, the game drives and our fellow guests with whom we have forged new friendships (Linda and John had dinner with us in Johannesburg on Friday night!).
We will continue to sing your praises.
Thank you.

Please pass on our thanks and best wishes to everyone at Djuma.
Kind regards,
Martyn
