Caracal: Felis caracal

General:

  • They are the heaviest of the small cats.
  • They are found in the more arid zones of Southern Africa, through Africa and into Asia.
  • They are mainly active at night but are sometimes seen during the day or dusk.
  • Males weigh between 12-18kg and females between 8-13kg.
  • They feed on small to medium sized prey like birds, mongoose, jackal, small antelope, hares and rodents.
  • Males and females are solitary and both are territorial.
  • They are known to compete with Black Backed Jackal and are more closely related to the Serval.
  • They kill large prey with a bite to the neck.
  • They have amazing jumping powers and may leap up to 3 meters from a lying down position.

Breeding:

  • Females give birth to 2-5 young after a gestation of just over 2 months.

Predators:

  • Black Backed Jackal kills unprotected young and leopard is a possible threat to them.
