General:
- They can be found all over Southern Africa,
living in riverine bush, dense thickets on hillsides and gullies.
- They are browsers, but will graze but only in
summer. The will also dig up roots if browse is short.
- They have a gland on the crown of the head,
and a gland found in the groin.
- Males live in areas overlapping female's areas,
it is not sure if they are territorial or not.
- They will live in one area unless they are forced
to move due to drought or food shortage.
- Males can weigh from 40-80kg, females 25-40kg.
- Males can be very dangerous if wounded or hunted
and have been known to kill humans and leopard.
- They are very shy antelope and may live close
to settlements for a long time before being noticed.
Breeding:
- They breed from mid March to mid May with another
peak from mid September to mid November.
- Females give birth to 1 young after a gestation
period of around 6 months.
Predators:
- Wild dog, hyena and leopard are their main predators.
