Help | Posting Articles on the Weblog
Title, Introduction & Category
To post a new article on the weblog, make sure you are logged in with your user name and password. Click on the “Add New Item” button in the navigation panel on the right hand side of the page. A new pop-up window will open. In the "Title" field [A], add a descriptive title for your post. In the "Intro" box [B], write a short introductory paragraph (no longer than a few lines), describing what the article is about and enticing people to open it and read the full version. The “Intro” text along with the title will appear in the list of articles on the main page of the weblog. Do not add photos, videos, media or the full article into this section, as it will take too much space on the homepage. The layout and general look of the site is extremely important, as we need to keep it neat and easy to read, so please respect the etiquette of the weblog. Choose the category in which you would like your article to appear from the category drop down menu [C].
In the horizontal tabbed menu [D], select "Body" [E] and add the main content of your article, along with your photos & videos etc. To learn how to add images, click here.
The toolbar just below the horizontal menu will add the following formatting options to your text. From left to right:
Bold Text: Select the text you want to make bold and then click the “Bold” icon in the toolbar menu. HTML code will be inserted around your selected text, which will then show as bold when you publish your article. To see the effect, click Preview.
Italics: Select the text you want to show in italics and click the “Italics” icon in the toolbar menu. HTML code will be inserted around your selected text, which will then show in Italics when you publish your article. To see the effect, click preview.
Insert Link: Select the text you want to make into a hyperlink and click the “Hyperlink” icon in the toolbar menu. A pop-up window will open. Type the URL you want to link to in the URL field and click the “OK” button. HTML code will be inserted around your selected text, which will then work as an active link to your URL when you publish your article. To see the effect, click preview.
Note: your browser may block this action at first. Simply click the message box in your browser window to allow script prompting and click the URL icon again. The pop-up window should open this time.
Align Left, Align Right and Align Centre: Aligns your text & media.
Add Left Box: Allows you to post images in your articles that float to the left of your text. Insert your image between the first ‘>’ and the second ‘<’.
Add Right Box: Allows you to post images in your articles that float to the right of your text. Insert your image between the first ‘>’ and the second ‘<’.
Insert Image: The “Insert Image” pop-up window will open, allowing you to upload an image and add it to your article. To learn how to add images, click here.
Insert Video: The “Media Console” pop-up window will open, allowing you to upload a video and add it to your article. To learn how to add video, click here.
Click on the options tab in the horizontal menu [D].
Disable comments?: You can disable commenting on your article. By default, comments are enabled.
Draft & Future Items: You can decide if you want to add your article immediately or later. If you are working on a long article, you can save it to “Drafts” and resume work on it later. If you save your article to drafts, it will not be added to the weblog yet. You will find your drafts on the homepage of your “Admin” panel. Click "Edit" next to the article in your drafts folder to resume working on it.
Email Notification: You can decide if you want to send out an email notification to the weblog subscribers by selecting or deselecting “Send notification to subscribers”. You can also choose to be notified of new comments on your article by selecting or deselecting the “Subscribe to comment notification” option. Both options are selected by default when adding a new item.
Click the "Preview" button in the horizontal menu to see what your article will look like once you publish it to the weblog. You can also use this facility to ensure that any extra formatting such as Bold, Italics & URL’s etc, have been added correctly. You will not see images and videos in the preview unfortunately.
Adding your Article
When you are ready to upload your article to the weblog, click the “Add Item” button in the horizontal menu [D]. You should get a message saying “Your Item has been added”. Close the pop-up window and click refresh in your main browser window to see your new article. It should be the second article from the top on the homepage.
It is advisable to write long articles in a word document and save it in a folder on your computer before adding it to the weblog. You can then simply copy and paste the text into the appropriate fields and add the necessary formatting code. This way you will always have a backup of all your articles on your computer and you will not lose your hard work if there is an error while uploading your article to the server. After adding formatting, images and links to your article, you can copy all the content back to your word document, so that you don't have to reformat it if you ever have to add it to the weblog again. Word also helps with spelling and grammar.
An Auto Save feature has been added to the weblog to help prevent loss of information in the event of a connection error. This feature will automatically save the item you are currently working on to your drafts every 10 min. It is advisable to click “Auto Save Now” [G] at the bottom of the window to save your work before you publish it. This will ensure that you don’t lose your article while publishing it if you experience a connection error.
