21/07/10: Doggone Awful Way to Start the Day
It always gets tougher to repeat great past safari’s with all my return guests.
I always believe the bush will show you what you deserve to see……..
Last night thankfully produced a leopard for my return guests.
This morning Steve decided to stay in, we left him under to sleep, but he had given me strict instructions to make it a quiet drive and not show his wife and son, whom, I did not have the pleasure of meeting last time, anything to exciting.
We headed out of camp and spent some time taking photographs of a raft of hippo. Handry came over the radio, like a voice from heaven, announcing the he had had located a leopard up a tree with a male lion near by. Hippo shoot cancelled we headed off in Handry’s direction to join him with this new visual jewel. The whole family is all keen photographers, and was drooling at the aspect of a leopard up a tree in this tangible morning light. We were half way there when I caught a glimpse of something off to my right, jamming on the brakes I told Steve’s wife that he was simply going to kill me when we returned and pointed to three wild dogs opposite us on the fire break.

I have not seen this male who is between 3 and 4, but judging from his bad limp on his right front. I knew he didn’t have the mobility to have caught this kudu, which leaves the dogs or the leopard? We left the male having a feed, with one wild eye on our departure.
Nkanyini the darling was still up the tree, which didn’t surprise me as she has always been a vigilant little girl. I knew she has a cub that I haven’t met yet and soon enough she began calling for her cub.
We sat with her for close on am hour, hoping like her for an appearance of her boy and not knowing his character, suggested to the clicking sound of camera shutters that it would probably be best for her if we left her to make contact with the cub.
Who knows the chain of events which lead to all three of these major killers together in such close proximity, all I knew is it was going to a tough one to explain past Steve when we got home.
It is mornings like these that make me feel for all you rat racers, just think how you could be living?
