Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides
They are a member of the above mentioned family found in the Southern sections of Europe, Madagascar, West Asia and in Southern Africa. They are an uncommon bird and seem to follow rainfall. They will usually be found around inland water surounded by thick vegetation. They are very shy and usually alone but do roost with other birds. They do not breed in the area, seeming to be 2 populations in Southern Africa. They feed on insects as their main diet but are known to catch small birds, fish and frogs. |
