African Spoonbill Platalea alba
They have an unusual shape to the ends of their bills, having a spoon-like shape. They can be found in an around shallow inland pans or dams. They are usually encountered singly but can be found in-groups and are a fairly shy bird. They are considered to be locally common in some areas but nomadic in others and may migrate. They breed between March and September. Both sexes incubate for upto 29 days. They will take small fish but mainly invertebrates from the water. |
